MANKATO, Minn.-- The opening games of the 20256 UMAC Baseball Tournament took place on Thursday at ISG Field in Mankato, Minn. No. 2 UW-Superior defeated No. 3 Northwestern 11-3 and No. 1 Bethany Lutheran beat No. 4 Minnesota Morris 15-5 in seven innings.
Game 1: UW-Superior 11, Northwestern 3
Tanner Voight helped the YellowJackets to an early 3-0 lead with his three-run homer in the bottom of the first.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard in the third on a solo shot from Davis Winter. UNW added a run on an RBI single from Solomon Kardell to slice the margin to one (3-2).
Northwestern tallied five in the fifth to take the 7-3 lead.
The ‘Jackets scored one in the fifth and Voight hit his second homer of the day in the sixth, this one for a grand slam. Niles Monroe hit a two-run homer later in the frame to reclaim the lead at 10-7.
In the eighth, UNW used a sacrifice fly for its final run of the game and UWS had a solo roundtripper for its final run.
Voight went 4-5 with three runs and seven RBI.
Game 2: Bethany Lutheran 15, Minnesota Morris 5 (7 innings)
Gary Swann and Xander Meissner both had four hits for the Vikings. Yunior Pena Torres had three hits and every batter in the BLC lineup accounted for at least one RBI.
Kellan Oligmueller and Bradie Black both went 2-3 for the Cougars. Trevor Haberman was 1-3 with two RBI, thanks to his two-run homer in the second inning.
Aidan Byrd earned his eighth win of the season on the mound as he fanned five and Drew Hedtke gave up one hit over three innings to earn his first save of the year.
