Going into the spring season, the Yellowjackets were just a half-point ahead of the Eagles with 61 points. However, the Yellowjackets managed to claim regular season wins in softball, men's tennis and men's outdoor track and field and pick up a second-place finish in women's tennis and third-place finish in women's outdoor track and field to put enough distance from the Eagles for the win.

Northwestern placed as the runner-up for the second time in as many years with 89.5 points. The Eagles repeated as regular season champions in baseball and women's tennis in the spring to remain solidly ahead of Bethany Lutheran College in third (83 points) and the University of Minnesota Morris in fourth (79.5). The Vikings did not win any spring championships but remained steady placing second in women's outdoor and third in baseball, softball and men's tennis. The Cougars collected a third-straight title in women's outdoor track and field to add to their solid finish.

Martin Luther College held strong in the spring to finish fifth with 51 points. The standings rounded out with Crown College in sixth (41), North Central University in seventh (36) and Northland College in eighth (28.5).

Wisconsin-Superior is the first new winner of the award since the 2008-09 season when Northwestern last won the honor. The College of St. Scholastica won 12-consectuive awards from 2009-10 to 2020-21. The award began in 1996-97 and is named after Mr. Jerome Kruse, a longtime athletic director at the former Northwestern College (Wis.) and Martin Luther.
