Introduction to the UMAC
The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC), which is comprised of seven full-time member schools from Minnesota and Wisconsin, began in 1972 as the Twin Rivers Conference and was renamed to its current title in 1983.
Bethany Lutheran College, Crown College, Martin Luther College, North Central University, University of Minnesota Morris, University of Northwestern, and University of Wisconsin-Superior make up the league's full-time membership. Joining the UMAC in 2009 as associate members in the sport of football were Greenville University and Westminster College (Mo.). The UMAC announced the addition of associate members for men's and women's tennis beginning in 2023 including Greenville, Mississippi University for Women, Principia College, Webster University and Westminster.
In 2008-09 academic year, the UMAC became a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III. Each of the UMAC institutions boast full membership in the NCAA at the Division III level. The UMAC completed its 10th year as a Division III member in 2017-18 and commemorated the occasion through 2018-19 with the "10-Year Celebration."
Corey Borchardt became the league's first full-time commissioner in 2008, following a ten-year run by Jim Unke, who also served as the Director of Athletics at Martin Luther College at the same time.
