ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) announced the award winners for the 2024 UMAC Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championship on Thursday. The University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets led all teams with 19 awards including three of the top honors. The Martin Luther College Knights followed with 12 awards won including the other three top honors.
Only results from the UMAC Indoor Championship meet count for consideration in the awards. The awards are nominated and voted on by the conference head coaches. All-Conference recognition is given to individuals who finished in first or second place in an individual event and to members of relay teams who finished in first place in a relay event at the UMAC Indoor Championship.
Wisconsin-Superior's Michael Butterfield led the way at the UMAC Championship, recording 30 points to earn Top Scoring Athlete of the Meet honors. The Yellowjacket's junior was also voted the Track Athlete of the Meet after winning three individual events: the Mile (4:31.17), the 3000 Meter (8:54.10), and the 5000 Meter (15:47.43).
Nate Ohman earned Field Athlete of the Meet honors for the Yellowjackets. The Wisconsin-Superior senior led all field contestants with 20 points at the UMAC Championship. Ohman won the Weight Throw with a 15.02m effort. He also earned gold in the Shot Put with a 14.95m throw.
Martin Luther's Samuel Plocher was named the UMAC Rookie of the Year. The freshman earned 20 points for the Knights at the UMAC Championship. In his first collegiate championship meet, Plocher ran an 8.60 to win the 60m Hurdles and leapt 1.94m to place first in the High Jump.
The MLC Knights earned Coaching Staff of the Year honors. The Knights, led by second-year head coach Breanna Olson, scored 153 points at the 2024 UMAC Championship to place second as a team, finishing 47 points and one place higher that last year's 106-point, third-place finish.
Martin Luther won the team sportsmanship award, an accolade that is selected by the UMAC coaches and awarded to the team that best represents sportsmanship throughout the entire season, including the championship event. Each team also had one representative named to the all-sportsmanship team.
