DULUTH, Minn. – The College of St. Scholastica’s women’s track and field team won its sixth straight UMAC Championship on Saturday as the Saints cruised to 296 points. The University of Minnesota, Morris claimed the men’s championship as both meets were held on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

On the women’s side, Minnesota, Morris took second in the meet with 160 points. Northwestern College followed with 76 points, while North Central University rounded out the top four teams with 46 points. In men’s action, the Cougars from Minnesota, Morris barely edged their opponents from St. Scholastica by a 191-187 margin. With 117 points, Northwestern College took third place, while Martin Luther finished fourth with 64 points.

North Central’s Catherine Mead was named the Women’s Track Athlete of the Meet after winning the 3000 meter steeplechase event and placing second in both the 1500 and 5000 meter races. Minnesota-Morris’ Sara Erickson earned Women’s Field Athlete of the Meet accolades as she took first place in the shot put competition while taking second in the discus and hammer throws. Following his team’s overall victory, St. Scholastica head coach Kirk Nauman was named the UMAC Women’s Coach of the Year.

Northwestern’s Cody Crum took Men’s Track Athlete of the Year honors after going home with a host of medals, having anchoring the winning 4x100 meter relay team, winning the 200 meter dash, and taking second in the 400 meter dash and the 4x400 meter relay. Tom Lyscio, who was named the Men’s Field Athlete of the Meet in the UMAC Indoor Championship, took the podium as the top men’s field athlete in the outdoor competition after winning the shot put competition and taking third place in the discus throw. Lyscio also finished fourth in the hammer throw event. After Minnesota-Morris’ team victory, the Cougars’ head coach in Jeremy Karger-Gatzow was chosen as the UMAC Men’s Coach of the Year.
