ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) announced their Athlete of the Week award winners Tuesday in the sports of baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s tennis. The awards are nominated by UMAC coaches and athletics communications staff and selected each week by the latter group.
BASEBALL ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Carlos Walta, Junior, Martin Luther Knights
Milwaukee, Wis. / Wisconsin Lutheran
- Walta had a good opening series in a Knights' uniform, leading MLC at the plate to help them top Hamline in two out of three (13-7 Game 1, 5-0 Game 3). Walta went 5-for-10 (.500) with 2 HR, 4 RBI, and Runs in three games against the Pipers.
BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Aidan Berg, Freshman, Martin Luther Knights
West Bend, Wis. / Lakeside Lutheran
- Berg had an impressive first start in his college career debut. The freshman tossed a complete-game shutout against Hamline in Topeka, Kansas on Saturday, resulting in a 5-0 win for the Knights. Berg was in total command on the hill, holding the Pipers to just two hits while also fanning three batters. MLC won the three-game series over Hamline.
SOFTBALL ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Baylee O'Donnell, Senior, UW-Superior Yellowjackets
Mendota Hights, Minn. / Richfield
- O'Donnell had a monster week for the Yellowjackets at the plate. Day one of the UW-Oshkosh saw her go 1-3 in games against Wisconsin Lutheran and Loras, but Sunday she went a perfect 6-6 against No. 4 UW-Oshkosh and Beloit. Versus the Buccaneers she garnered eight RBIs while hitting a pair of doubles.
SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Emily Meyer, Sophomore, Bethany Lutheran Vikings
Swea City, Iowa / North Union
- Meyer appeared in all four games for Bethany in Florida this weekend, tossing 17.1 innings and allowing seven earned runs. She tossed a complete game shutout in Saturday's win over RPI, allowing just four hits and striking out seven while also picking up the win against Benedictine earlier in the day after allowing one earned run in seven innings.
MEN’S TENNIS SOUTH DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Nacho Cachaza, Senior, Principia Panthers
Buenos Aires, Argentina / SEADEA
- Cachaza was an instrumental force in Principia going 2-0 on the week. He went 4-0 on the week as Principia defeated Earlham College 5-2, and Illinois College 6-1. At 1st Doubles, Cachaza and partner Ernesto Botero dominated, as they defeated Earlham 6-1 and Illinois College 6-0. At 2nd singles, Cachaza had a hard fought 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 victory against Earlham and a 7-5, 6-2 victory against Illinois College. The wins helped move Principia to 4-1 on the season.
WOMEN’S TENNIS SOUTH DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Saray Hernandez Cisneros, Junior, Principia Panthers
Puebla, Mexico / Centro Esc Niños Héroes de Chapultepec
- Saray went 2-0 in an exhibition match this weekend against Southwestern Illinois College. After helping earn a hard-fought 7-5 victory at #1 doubles, she won decisively 6-4, 6-0 at #1 singles.
The UMAC is an NCAA Division III member comprised of eight full-time member schools from Minnesota and Wisconsin: Bethany Lutheran College, Crown College, Martin Luther College, North Central University, Northland College, University of Minnesota Morris, University of Northwestern, and University of Wisconsin-Superior.
