ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) announced its Player of the Week award winners Tuesday in the sports of baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s tennis for the week of February 26 - March 3, 2024. The UMAC Player of the Week awards are nominated by UMAC coaches and athletics communications/sports information staff and selected each week by the latter group.
BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Isaac Fugere, Senior, University of Wisconsin-Superior
Duluth, Minn. / Duluth East
- Fugere had a monster week at the plate for the Yellowjackets.
- Starting in all five games, the senior catcher batted .500 while adding three doubles, two home runs, and nine RBI's as the 'Jackets went 3-2 on the week.
BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Bryce Crabb, Graduate Student, University of Northwestern
Des Moines, Iowa / Grand View Christian
- Crabb turned in a historic performance in his only appearance on the mound this past week.
- In UNW's 9-1 win over Macalester, Crabb went 8 innings, only gave up one run, and struck out 11 batters.
- The win was the 22nd of his career which made the all-time winningest pitcher in UNW Baseball history.
SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sydney Gardner, Freshman, Crown College
Waterloo, Iora / Columbus Catholic
- Gardner totaled six RBI on four hits including one home run and one double over 13 at bats.
- She scored one run and added a stolen base.
SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Kayla Senne, Freshman, Bethany Lutheran College
Granite Falls, Wash. / Snohomish
- Senne tossed 8.0 innings in the Vikings first day in Florida, going 1-1 on the afternoon.
- Claimed the win in a five-inning shutout over Cabrini, striking out five.
MEN’S TENNIS NORTH DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jacob Weddle, Junior, University of Northwestern
Rhinelander, Wis. / Rhinelander
- Weddle went 4-0 himself on Saturday as UNW beat St. Scholastica 5-4 and Ripon 9-0, improving to 15-0 on the season for the undefeated Eagles
- The junior won his singles matches, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 (vs. CSS) and 6-3, 6-2 (vs. Ripon).
- He also teamed with Stewart Morrell to win both doubles matches, 8-7 (7-4) (CSS) and 8-2 (Ripon).
WOMEN’S TENNIS NORTH DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Claudia Curtis, Freshman, University of Wisconsin-Superior
Lake Mills, Wis. / Lake Mills
- Curtis shined for the Yellowjackets this weekend, sweeping all singles matches against Simpson, Ripon and UW-Eau Claire.
- In the doubles scene, she won two-of-three matches teaming up with Brooke Wilfong, only falling to the Blugolds 6-8.
MEN’S TENNIS SOUTH DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jesús Soto Bossa, Sophomore, Principia College
Cartagena, Colombia
- Jesús went 4-0 without dropping a set at #1 singles and #1 doubles in two 9-0 wins over Illinois College (8-4 / 6-0,6-0) and Simpson College (8-2 / 6-3,6-1).
