Northwestern, UW-Superior Advance to UMAC Volleyball Tournament Championship Game

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The opening round of the 2024 UMAC Volleyball Tournament took place on Wednesday night as four teams competed in a pair of semifinal contests. The No. 1 University of Northwestern Eagles and the No. 2 University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets won their matches to advance to the championship.

Northwestern (23-8, 13-1 UMAC) hosted the North Central University Rams (16-10, 7-7 UMAC) for their semifinal match. The Eagles had won both of their previous matches this fall against the Rams, sweeping both matches 3-0.
 
In the tournament game on Wednesday night, Northwestern took a 3-0 victory over North Central to advance to host this Saturday’s championship game.
 
Ari Schmidt and Ana Egge each led the Eagles with 12 kills on .400 hitting in the win. Marley Aune added eight kills on a match-high .533 hitting percentage and had seven total blocks.
 
Sydney Carlson led the Rams with 10 kills in the match. Grace Brigson tied for the match-high in assists with 22.
 
Northwestern hit .360 as a team while holding the Rams to a .067 hitting percentage.
 


SEMIFINAL: No. 2 Yellowjackets def. No. 3 Cougars, 3-1

UW-Superior (24-7, 12-2 UMAC) hosted the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars (16-11, 11-3 UMAC) for their semifinal contest. The Yellowjackets had split their regular season series with the Cougars, having swept Minnesota Morris 3-0 in September and then being reverse-swept 3-2 just a couple weeks ago.
 
In Wednesday night’s playoff game, UW-Superior defeated Minnesota Morris 3-1 to advance to Saturday’s tournament title game. The Yellowjackets took the opening two sets 25-22, 25-15, but the Cougars rallied to take set three 25-18. UW-Superior proceeded to win set four 25-15 to punch their ticket to the tournament championship game.
 
Makenna Hohbein led the Yellowjackets with 13 kills in the match. Sydney Smith had eight kills on .438 hitting. Jenna Anderson had 42 digs.

Lacie O’Leary had a team-high 15 kills for Minnesota Morris on .265 hitting. Sydney Petersen led the Cougars with 29 assists.
 
The Yellowjackets outhit the Cougars .215 to .130 in the match.

The Northwestern Eagles and UW-Superior Yellowjackets will battle for the UMAC postseason title and the automatic bid to the NCAA DIII national tournament on Saturday, November 16 at the Ericksen Center in St. Paul, Minnesota at 7:00pm.
