ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) announced the recipients of their 2024 women’s soccer awards on Tuesday. The awards are nominated and voted on by the UMAC women’s soccer head coaches.
Mya Holmquist of the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets was named the 2024 UMAC Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Year. The senior forward led the conference in goals (16), game-winning goals (5), and points (37). Holmquist scored a goal for the Yellowjackets in every conference game she competed in this fall.
Brenna Mattson of UW-Superior was named the 2024 UMAC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Year. The senior center defender anchored a Yellowjackets’ backline that allowed the fewest goals against in conference games, conceding only seven goals to UMAC opponents (two of which were scored while Mattson wasn’t on the field) and allowing an average of just 9.21 shots per game.
Johnette Nagbe of the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars was named the 2024 UMAC Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Year. After missing all of 2023 to injury, Nagbe completed in the first game of her collegiate career on September 21 this fall, scoring two goals against the UMAC-champion UW-Superior Yellowjackets while playing just 37 minutes. In 11 games this fall, Nagbe scored four goals with two game-winners for the Cougars. She also had two assists and 10 total points.
Allison DeGroot of UW-Superior and Katie Kandt of the Crown College Polars were named the 2024 UMAC Women’s Soccer Co-Coaches of the Year. In her eighth season leading the Yellowjackets, DeGroot led UW-Superior to their fourth-consecutive UMAC Regular Season Championship with an 11-1 conference record. In her fourth season leading the Polars, Kandt led Crown to clinch their fourth UMAC postseason berth in the last five years.
The Martin Luther College Knights won the team sportsmanship award, an accolade that is selected by the UMAC coaches and awarded to the team that best represents sportsmanship throughout the entire season. Each team also had one representative earn all-sportsmanship honors.
