UMAC Player of the Week Awards – October 30, 2023

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) announced its Player of the Week award winners Monday in the sports of football, volleyball, and men's and women's soccer. The UMAC Player of the Week awards are nominated by UMAC coaches and athletics communications/sports information staff and selected each week by the latter group. 

FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Paul Garrett, Senior, Greenville University
Goodwater, Ala. / Clay Central
- Garrett scored three touchdowns and averaged 13.8 yards per carry, rushing for 193 yards.
- Powered the Panthers to a 38-6 win at Westminster.
- Also had one catch for 29 yards.
 
FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Zane Schlabach, Senior, University of Northwestern
Keystone, S.D. / Rapid City Christian
- Schlabach was a dominant and disruptive force on defense leading UNW to a 21-14 win.
- Finished with four tackles (three solo), 3.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles.
- His 3.5 sacks are a career high and went for a total of 17 yards lost.
 
FOOTBALL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Basil Demco, Sophomore, University of Northwestern
Fontana, Wis. / Big Foot
- Demco made the biggest play of the game on special teams for the Eagles in their 21-14 win over Martin Luther.
- The Eagles blocked an MLC punt and Demco scooped it up and ran it back 36 yards for a touchdown.
- Also added a tackle on special teams.
 
VOLLEYBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Abby Glanzer, Junior, No. 5 University of Northwestern
Brandon, S.D. / Sioux Falls Christian
- Glanzer was an unstoppable force in the Eagles' undefeated week with a remarkable 35 kills (5.8 kills per set) in only six sets.
- Had incredible numbers in Friday's win over Bethany Lutheran with 22 kills on 36 attacks for a .556 percentage.
- Added 3 aces and 13 digs in the two matches during the week.
 
VOLLEYBALL SETTER OF THE WEEK
McKenzie Newton, Senior, University of Minnesota Morris
West Fargo, N.D. / West Fargo Sheyenne
- Newton averaged a whopping 12.0 assists per set in wins at Wisconsin-Superior and Northland this past weekend.
- She registered a double-double of 45 assists and 12 digs against the Yellowjackets and had 39 assists and six digs the following day.
- Added a combined five kills, two aces, and three block assists in the two matches.
 
VOLLEYBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ava Brunn, Sophomore, University of Minnesota Morris
Lake City, Minn. / Lake City Lincoln
- Brunn averaged 8.59 digs per set in victories over Wisconsin-Superior and Northland over the weekend.
- She had 41 digs in a four-set win over the Yellowjackets, ending tied for fifth most digs in a single match in program history.
- The sophomore came back with 18 more in a sweep of Northland on Saturday.
 
MEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Aaron Hill, Junior, University of Northwestern
New Brighton, Minn. / Mounds View
- Facing two must-win games to stay alive for postseason play, Hill turned in his best week of the season.
- The junior scored 2 goals in a 3-1 win at Martin Luther and added another in a 3-0 win at Northland that clinched a playoff berth for the Eagles.
- He led UNW in shots and shots on goal in both matches and had the game-winning goal in both as well.
 
MEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kyle Dipzinski, Freshman, University of Northwestern
Ionia, Mich. / Ionia
- Needing two wins to have a chance at qualifying for the UMAC Tournament, Dipzinski became a stone wall in net.
- The freshman made four saves and allowed zero goals at Martin Luther before subbing out for the final 11 minutes.
- Saturday at Northland, Dipzinski again made four saves and shut out the Lumberjacks to make the playoffs.
 
WOMEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Katie Schoeneck, Freshman, Martin Luther College
College Station, Texas / Luther Prep
- Schoeneck finished off her freshman season with another impressive showing.
- Against Northwestern on Wednesday, the forward compiled two goals, an assist, and four shots on goal.
- In a 8-0 win over North Central on Saturday, Schoeneck recorded a hat trick with all three shots on net and picked up another assist.
 
WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Elysabeth Lough, Junior, Northland College
Las Vegas, Nev. / Arbor View
- Lough recorded 26 saves in two games to reach 10 games with double-digit saves this season.
- Had 10 saves against Wisconsin-Superior and 16 saves against Northwestern.
- Ended the weekend with a save percentage of 83.9 percent.
