SUPERIOR, Wis.---A pair of low-scoring "upset" highlighted the opening day of the 2022 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) softball postseason tournament as No. 3 Bethany Lutheran College and No. 4 Minnesota Morris emerged victorious Thursday.

Just five total runs were scattered across the two games as No. 3 Bethany Lutheran defeated No. 2 University of Northwestern 2-1 in Thursday's opener before No. 4 Minnesota Morris shutout No. 1 University of Wisconsin-Superior 2-0 in the second game. The Eagles and Yellowjackets will meet in an elimination game Friday at 10:30 a.m., while the Vikings and Cougars will face off at 12:45 p.m. for a spot in the championship round Saturday.

GAME 1: No. 3 Bethany Lutheran def. No. 2 Northwestern, 2-1 | Box Score |
Over the course of three games prior to the tournament this season, Bethany Lutheran defeated Northwestern twice by a pair of one-run games. After scoring two runs through three innings and behind solid pitching throughout, the Vikings managed to pull off a third one-run win when it mattered the most.
  • Both Vikings' runs were unearned. In the first inning, Katelyn Halbach scored on a wild pitch to make it a 1-0 game. Then, in the top of the third, Halbach scored again on a double-play fly ball from Kaija Mork to the outfield which turned into a sacrifice.
  • Kayla Senne shined in the circle for the Vikings as she went the distance allowing just one earned run on three hits with nine strikeouts. Halbach led offensively going 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
  • Briggs Carlson also put out a solid complete game effort on the mound for the Eagles allowing just three total hits and no earned runs with three strikeouts. Mikayla Gee led going 1-for-3 with the lone run scored for Northwestern.

GAME 2: No. 4 Minnesota Morris def. No. 1 Wisconsin-Superior, 2-0 | Box Score |
In three previous meetings this season, top-seeded Wisconsin-Superior tallied 37 runs against Minnesota Morris. However, when it mattered the most, the Cougars completely shutdown the high-powered Yellowjacket offense behind a spectacular outing from Mollie Dummer on the mound.
  • Senior pitcher Dummer kept the 'Jacket bats quiet allowing just two total hits and one walk in seven innings of work while picking up a strikeout against just 24 batters faced for the Cougars.
  • Following four scoreless innings, the Cougars plated both runs in the top of the fifth without an RBI recorded. Anna Athey scored on a wild pitch before Sierra Stevens stole home.
  • Tayler Kraemer put together a solid effort for the Yellowjackets surrendering just four total hits with four strikeouts. Zoe Thomson and Jessica Jacobson tallied the lone hits for the host team.
