2022 All-UMAC Women's Soccer Postseason Awards
ST. PAUL, MN - For the second straight year, the University of Wisconsin-Superior has won both the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season and tournament title. The Yellowjackets have been dominant in UMAC play, not losing a match in conference play over the past two seasons. This weekend, UW-Superior will head down to Dubuque, Iowa to compete in the NCAA Tournament with a first round matchup against Loras College.
Lindrey Schendel of UW-Superior is taking home Defensive Player of the Year for the conference after her outstanding season. Schendel helped lead the Yellowjackets to the best defense in the UMAC this season, giving up less than a goal a game at .82. Also from UW-Superior is Head Coach Allison DeGroot being voted on by the coaches around the conference as the Coach of the Year. Northwestern's Haley Mersberger has been awarded with a couple of awards, the freshman was named the UMAC Offensive Player of the Year and the Rookie of the Year after her record setting freshman season. Mersberger finished the year fourth in the nation in total goals scored with twenty-six.
UW-Superior's dominance this season was reflected in the voting for the All-UMAC teams this year. In total, six of the eleven spots on the All-UMAC First Team were Yellowjackets. Including Schendel, the other UW-Superior players to earn All-UMAC First Team honors were Mya Holmquist, Niya Wilson, Allison Alessi, Halle Carlson, and Jenna Lang. Also from UW-Superior was Tori Vosburg named to the All-UMAC Second Team and Kamryn Hill named to the All-UMAC Honorable Mention Team.
The Northwestern Eagles also had a strong showing on the All-UMAC First Team. Including Mersberger, the other athletes named to the All-UMAC First Team were Mya Chan and Miciah Renn. Northwestern also has a couple of athletes named to the All-UMAC Second Team in Megan Moeller and Kaylin Dahl. Lauren Bosley and Megan Kohrt were named to the All-UMAC Honorable Mention team.
The Vikings of Bethany Lutheran have Ashley Casper named to the All-UMAC First Team, and then a UMAC high four players named to the All-UMAC Second Team. Those players are Elena Luján Rubio, Asia Jota, Brooke Wolanin, and Olaitz Muguruza.
The Crown Polars earned their first ever trip to the UMAC Tournament this year, and they also had Ella Hollander earn a spot on the All-UMAC First Team. The Polars then had a conference high five players on the All-UMAC Honorable Mention team, they are Audri Sturgeon, Emma Domka, Ashley Pierce, Abigail Shull, and Lexi Shreve.
The Minnesota Morris Cougars have five players named to All-UMAC teams this season. Two of them are on the All-UMAC Second Team in Monica Calderon and Jay Kwateh. The Cougars then have three on the All-UMAC Honorable Mention team in Bernadette Clenik, Kim Peters, and Jadyn Sondrol.
Rounding out the All-UMAC Second Team then is Kara Lewis from North Central, Hannah Schroeder from Martin Luther, and Elysabeth Lough from Northland. The Knights of Martin Luther had a strong showing on the All-UMAC Honorable Mention team with four selections. Those players are Grace Sievert, Lilianne Zimpelman, Megan Martin, and Nicole Porter. Northland also had a couple of players honored on the All-UMAC Honorable Mention team in Liberty Dickerson and Kirsten Vensland.
Martin Luther won the Team Sportsmanship Award, an accolade that is selected by the UMAC coaches and awarded to the team that best represents sportsmanship throughout the entire season. Each team also had one representative named to the individual sportsmanship award list.
