Yellowjacket duo, Sweeney headline 2020 UMAC All-Conference Awards

ST. PAUL, Minn. --- Securing the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament title this past weekend, the University of Wisconsin-Superior men's golf program notched three major awards, as the UMAC announced its All-UMAC selections and major award winners on Tuesday afternoon. 

UWS' senior duo of Joey Cummings and Ryan Peterson were both recognized by the UMAC coaches, earning Player of the Year and Tournament low-medalist honors, respectively. Yellowjackets Head Coach Paul Eberhardt was selected Coach of the Year by his peers for the fourth year in a row.

Jacob Sweeney of North Central, who produced an outstanding first-year for the Rams, was named Rookie of the Year.

Cummings finished second in the UMAC in scoring average (74.5), earning his second consecutive Player of te Year honor. The Duluth, Minn.-native posted two wins and four top-five finishes in six events played in 2021. He will complete his decorated UMAC career as a four-time First Team All-UMAC selection, two-time UMAC Player of the Year and as a UMAC low-medalist in 2017. 

Peterson, Cummings' high-school and now collegiate teammate, notched his second-straight low-medalist honor with a UMAC-record three-round score of 211 (-5), which included a final round 68 (-4). He is the first-ever player to finish under par at the UMAC Championships. During the season, Peterson won three times and finished in the top-10 in 4-of-6 events. The Duluth, Minn.-native concludes his UMAC career as a four-time First Team All-UMAC recipient and two-time UMAC low-medalist. 

Eberhardt's Yellowjackets led from start-to-finish at both the UMAC Spring Preview and UMAC Championships, earning their third-consecutive conference title. As a team, UWS finished first at the Turtleback Invite, the UMAC Spring Preview and the UMAC Championships, winning 3-of-6 events on the year. 

Sweeney, a first-year Ram from Madera, Calif., burst onto the UMAC Men's Golf scene in 2021. He finished fourth in the UMAC in scoring average (76.4) and racked up four top-10s in five events, including a victory at the NCU Triangular. 

The UMAC First Team all-conference performers by virtue of finishing top eight (including ties) plus two additional coaches' votes is as follows in order of UMAC Championships finish: Peterson, Brady Raph (UMM), Cummings, Noah Johnson (UNW), Sam Albrecht (UWS), Sweeney, Gabe Stoesz (BLC) and Stephen Biebert (MLC). Anthony Ahrens (CSS) and Isaac Wright (NCU) were both selected as at-large recipients to round out the First Team All-UMAC squad.

Sam Long (CSS), Orion Collins (UMM), Jackson Nyhus (UNW), Andrew Moorse (Crown) and Liam Butche (CSS) were named to the Honorable Mention All-UMAC team. 

Northwestern won the team sportsmanship award, an accolade that is selected by the UMAC coaches and awarded to the team that best represents sportsmanship throughout the entire season, including the championship event. Each team also had one representative named to the individual sportsmanship award list.
