Top seeds win Wednesday to advance to UMAC women's soccer title game

ST. PAUL, Minn.---The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) women’s soccer championship will run through Superior, Wisconsin, as the top-seed Unviersity of Wisconsin-Superior won its semifinal match Wednesday and will host the University of Northwestern Saturday after theEagles also collected a semifinal win. 

No. 1 Wisconsin-Superior downed No. 4 University of Minnesota Morris 6-0 while No.2 Northwestern needed a penalty opportunity to take down No. 3 Bethany Lutheran College.

No. 1 Wisconsin-Superior defated Minnesota Morris 4-1 Friday to lock up the program's first title on the road. The Yellowjackets picked up where they left off at home Wednesday taking down the No. 4 Cougars 4-0 to advance to their third championship game in four years.
  • The Yellowjackets got on the board early with a goal from Niya Wilson in the 17th minute. Wilson finished with two goals and an assist. 
  • Annah Schussman scored twice including early in the second half to put the 'Jackets up 3-0.
  • Five different players were responsible for the Yellowjacket goals and assists including Schussman, Wilson, Maggie McAlister, Emma Fornego and Ava Giswold.

A week ago, No. 2 Northwestern and No. 3 Bethany Lutheran drew to a 0-0 tie to set up an intriguing third match between the two squads. This time around, the two teams battled in a low-scoring affair with Northwestern finally breaking through to earn a return trip to the UMAC title game after missing out in the 2020-21 spring season.
 
  • The game opened with 66 minutes of scoreless play after the two squads played to a scoreless tie a week ago. 
  • The Eagles got on the board in the 67th minute with a penalty kick goal from RJ Mullin.
  • Northwestern controlled a majority of play taking 10 shots with five on goal. Megan Moeller led the offensive attack with four shots.
