Dear Sports... - Becca Doering, Martin Luther
As part of the UMAC efforts to highlight student-athletes through the "UMAC Spring Salute" in light of COVID-19, the UMAC has launched the "Dear Sports..." initiative. This is an opportunity for student-athletes to write a "thank you" letter to their sport at the end of their careers. The NCAA released the following video after the cancellation of spring sports in mid-March. This is the premise for the feature: "Dear Sports"
The debut letter is from Martin Luther College senior softball player, Becca Doering.
Becca's Letter
Dear Sports:
Thank you. For teaching me what it means to be strong. What it means to never give up, even when you are tired and do not think you can carry on. What it means to be a leader. What it means to be a teammate. What it means to be a part of something bigger than yourself.
You put me through my highest of highs and my lowest of lows. You taught me how to face adversity head on. How to embrace the unexpected. You taught me that hard work is unmatched so if you think you are working hard enough, give it more. You have given me the opportunity to turn friends to family and go places I never would have dreamed of. You taught me to capitalize on my strengths and work to grow in my weaknesses. You taught me that even the most unlikely of people can become inseparable. You taught me to love fiercely because when something is your passion it drives you to be better, to do better. You taught me that I may have to fight some battles one-on-one, but I am never alone, there is an army behind me cheering me on the whole way. You taught me that things do not always go as planned. There is no use stopping and getting upset about it, pick yourself up because the game isn't over. You gave the opportunity to reflect my Savior.
And finally you taught me that chapters in life may come to an end, but the lessons we learn, the strength we grew, and the bonds we create stay with us every step of the way. They form us into the people we are meant to become. And for that...I am forever grateful.
