UMAC Lessons from Leaders: Wells Patten, St. Scholastica
The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Lessons from Leaders video series is released Wednesdays in 2019-20 and features Commissioner Corey Borchardt interviewing conference coaches about their success within the conference and at the regional and national levels. The series promotes coaches who have helped enhance the identity and image of the conference as whole. The interviewees include coaches who either won a UMAC regular season or postseason title in 2018-19 or were featured as a UMAC Coach of the Decade during the conference's "10-Year Celebration."
In this episode of UMAC Lessons from Leaders, UMAC Commissioner Corey Borchardt sits down with College of St. Scholastica men's and women's tennis head coach Wells Patten who is one of the most decorated and successful coaches in conference history. Patten owns 40 regular season UMAC championships between the two sports and 38 tournament titles. He also has been voted as UMAC Coach of the Year by his peers 17 times.
Patten began his 24th season at the helm of the Saints' programs in 2020. His women's program has made seven NCAA tournament appearances while the Saint men earned their first-ever tournament berth in 2019. Patten boasts a remarkable 665 career coaching wins between the men's and women's teams.
Commissioner Borchardt talks with Patten about lessons he's learned over the course of his career and how he got into coaching. He also talks about the importance of developing players as people and not just athletes, as well as finding ways to practice selfcare as a collegiate coach.
