UMAC Lessons from Leaders: Zach Otto-Fisher, Wisconsin-Superior
The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Lessons from Leaders video series is released Wednesdays in 2019-20 and features Commissioner Corey Borchardt interviewing conference coaches about their success within the conference and at the regional and national levels. The series promotes coaches who have helped enhance the identity and image of the conference as whole. The interviewees include coaches who either won a UMAC regular season or postseason title in 2018-19 or were featured as a UMAC Coach of the Decade during the conference's "10-Year Celebration."
This episode of the UMAC Lessons from Leaders series sees Commissioner Corey Borchardt sit down with University of Wisconsin-Superior women's basketball head coach Zach Otto-Fisher. Since taking over the Yellowjacket program, Otto-Fisher has guided the team to back-to-back regular season UMAC championships and an NCAA tournament appearance in 2017-18. In both seasons at the helm, Otto-Fisher has been named UMAC Coach or Co-Coach of the Year. He has also coached back-to-back UMAC Players of the Year in Hailey Kontny (2017-18) and Hannah Norlin (2018-19).
In less than three complete seasons, Otto-Fisher has compiled an overall record of 61-15 and 31-3 UMAC record to date. He has carried on the legacy of a Wisconsin-Superior women's basketball program that had three-straight UMAC undefeated seasons and has won five-consecutive league titles including four in the UMAC.
Commissioner Corey Borchardt discusses several topics with Otto-Fisher including sustaining successful program culture and focusing on relationships with players and program members. He also dishes advice for young coaches and lessons that have resonated with him as he continues his career.
