UMAC Lessons from Leaders: Tim Grosz, Northwestern
The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Lessons from Leaders video series is released Wednesdays in 2019-20 and features Commissioner Corey Borchardt interviewing conference coaches about their success within the conference and at the regional and national levels. The series promotes coaches who have helped enhance the identity and image of the conference as whole. The interviewees include coaches who either won a UMAC regular season or postseason title in 2018-19 or were featured as a UMAC Coach of the Decade during the conference's "10-Year Celebration."
In this UMAC Lessons from Leaders episode, Commissioner Corey Borchardt discusses the success of the University of Northwestern men's basketball program over the last two decades with head coach Tim Grosz. In 2018-19, Grosz was named the UMAC Men's Basketball Coach of the Decade after leading the Eagles to unprecedented success in the conference's first 10 years of being a Division III member. During Grosz' tenure, the Northwestern men's basketball team has qualified for nine NCAA tournaments and made a run to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2014-15. Under his leadership, the Eagles have won 14 regular season titles and 11 postseason titles including eight of the last nine.
The 2019-20 season marks Grosz' 20th year leading the Eagles. He owns 374 career victories and has been named the UMAC Coach of the Year nine times. After starting 2-7 in 2014-15, Grosz led the Eagles to an 18-game winning streak which was the longest in program history. Last season, the Eagles also upset No. 3 Saint John's University in the opening round of the NCAA tournament for the program's third NCAA postseason win and fourth in UMAC history for men's basketball.
Commissioner Corey Borchardt discusses several topics with Grosz including his program's pillars and purpose beyond winning as well as lessons he's learned from other coaches and the need for consistent evaluation as a coach to improve and sustain success.
