UMAC honors record 524 fall student-athletes with academic all-conference

ST. PAUL, Minn.---The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) topped its previous record for fall academic all-conference awards handed out with a new record of 524 student-athletes earning academic all-conference honors for 2019, it was announced Wednesday.

Individuals who earn a 3.5 or better grade point average (GPA) or better during their respective semesters of competition are recognized with the prestigious individual honor, while the team with the top GPA in each sport is also recognized. The previous UMAC record for fall sports was set in 2016 when 513 student-athletes were acknowledged for academic achievement in the sports of men's and women's cross country, football, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer and volleyball. 

The College of St. Scholastica finished with a fall-best 99 student-athletes honored with 28 coming from the Saints' women's soccer program. Martin Luther College had the second-most student-athletes earn recognition with 85, while the University of Northwestern had 67 awardees.

For the fall awards by sport, football had the top number of players recognized with 113 awards. Women's soccer was just behind with 110 honorees and volleyball tallied 73 honors. 

In the team competition, Martin Luther claimed four of the eight awards which are given to the team with the top team GPA for their respective corresponding semesters. The Knights took the top awards including the top overall GPA in women's golf (3.868), as well as women's soccer (3.652), men's soccer (3.312) and football (2.934). St. Scholastica had two top team GPAs in volleyball (3.68) and men's cross country (3.48). Crown College took the top mark in women's cross country (3.818) and North Central University topped men's golf (3.53).

Three teams that won at least a share of regular season conference titles also boasted the top team GPA in their respective sport including St. Scholastica men's cross country and volleyball and Martin Luther football.
