UMAC Lessons from Leaders: Joe Mooney, Wisconsin-Superior
The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Lessons from Leaders video series is released Wednesdays in 2019-20 and features Commissioner Corey Borchardt interviewing conference coaches about their success within the conference and at the regional and national levels. The series promotes coaches who have helped enhance the identity and image of the conference as whole. The interviewees include coaches who either won a UMAC regular season or postseason title in 2018-19 or were featured as a UMAC Coach of the Decade during the conference's "10-Year Celebration."
The opening episode of UMAC Lessons from Leaders highlights University of Wisconsin-Superior men's soccer head coach Joe Mooney who led his squad to its first-ever regular season conference title in 2018 and its second-consecutive UMAC postseason championship. Last fall, Mooney's Yellowjackets posted a 20-game unbeaten streak and went on to become the first UMAC men's soccer team to win a game in the NCAA postseason since the conference became a Division III member league.
Mooney is the all-time wins leader in Wisconsin-Superior men's soccer history and began his 12th season at the helm this fall. Over the last two seasons, the Yellowjackets have compiled a 21-1-2 record in the UMAC.
In the interview, Commissioner Corey Borchardt interviews Mooney about his team's recent success and how he hopes to sustain it moving forward. Other topics of discussion also include impactful lessons he's learned from coaching, traits of successful coaches and building positive culture and values.
