UMAC Lessons from Leaders: Chad Salmela, St. Scholastica

The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Lessons from Leaders video series is released Wednesdays in 2019-20 and features Commissioner Corey Borchardt interviewing conference coaches about their success within the conference and at the regional and national levels. The series promotes coaches who have helped enhance the identity and image of the conference as whole. The interviewees include coaches who either won a UMAC regular season or postseason title in 2018-19 or were featured as a UMAC Coach of the Decade during the conference's "10-Year Celebration." 

In this UMAC Lessons from Leaders, Commissioner Corey Borchardt meets with College of St. Scholastica head cross country coach Chad Salmela to discuss successful coaching and his coaching journey. In his first three seasons leading the Saints' women's program, Salmela has been named the UMAC Women's Cross Country Coahc of the Year after his teams won conference championship titles. Under his leadership, Casey Hovland twice earned medalist honors and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship meet. 

The 2019 season marks Salmela's fourth season leading the Saints cross country programs. Additionally, Salmela spent 10 years leading the St. Scholastica Nordic ski programs before taking 

Commissioner Corey Borchardt discusses several topics with Salmela including key learning moments and memories over the course of his career as well as the changing  coaching landscape for Division III coaches.
