UMAC Game of the Week: St. Scholastica vs. Wisconsin-Superior - Women's Soccer
The UMAC Game of the Week runs each Thursday during the conference regular season and breaks down one key matchup from one sport.
DULUTH, Minn.---Most of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) women's soccer conference schedule will conclude next Tuesday, Oct. 29 with one of the biggest games of the year slated for that date that could have a huge impact on the regular season title and postseason playoff seeding. The College of St. Scholastica has all but locked up a second-straight UMAC women's title and will look to do so and avenge a loss from last season when it hosts the University of Wisconsin-Superior Saturday.
***UPDATE***
St. Scholastica won 4-0
Matchup History
- Wisconsin-Superior upset St. Scholastica in the UMAC tournament last season scoring in the 90th minute to end the top-seeded Saints' season and send the No. 4-seeded Yellowjackets to the title game.
- In last year's regular season match ups, the Saints won both contests with scores of 5-0 and 1-0. With a new format this fall, the two teams will meet just once in the regular season.
- The women's soccer edition of the "bridge rivalry" goes back to 1993 with the two teams playing 16 times since then. The Saints have lost just once and have allowed just four total goals to the Yellowjackets in those matchups.
- The last two games these teams played were both 1-0 shutouts with the Saints taking a win in the regular season and the Yellowjackets earning the postseason win.
This Season
- St. Scholastica boasts a 6-0 record but could move to 7-0 and clinch at least a share of the regular season title with a victory at home Saturday against Bethany Lutheran College. The Saints are 10-7 in the regular season and earned a signature win against an Augsburg University squad that is ranked in the top four of the NCAA Division III North Region.
- Wisconsin-Superior is 5-1 in conference play with just one loss coming to Northwestern Tuesday. The Yellowjackets have already clinched a postseason berth and do not compete Saturday. They still have one game remaining on Saturday, Nov. 2 against Martin Luther College following Tuesday's game that could have a significant impact on teams qualifying and seeding.
- St. Scholastica has not allowed a single goal to any UMAC teams this season for six shutout wins. They boast the league's best scoring average at 4.8 goals per game and have held opponents to 1.8 shots per game.
- Wisconsin-Superior has been similarly strong defensively with the second-fewest goals allowed in conference play with just three total.
