Northwestern lands at No. 7 in first 2019 NCAA Division III regional rankings

ST. PAUL, Minn.---As it has done over the last few years, the University of Northwestern volleyball program represented the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) in the first NCAA Division III Central Region ranking of the season, it was announced Wednesday.

Northwestern sits at No. 7 in the Central Region rankings which will ultimately be used to determine selections to the NCAA tournament. The Eagles are the lone UMAC squad represented in the rankings that include four teams from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). 

This season the Eagles have faced four other ranked teams from the Central Region, but also has three wins against teams ranked in other regions including a decisive 3-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire which ranks No. 4 in Midwest Region. In the Central Region, the Eagles have two loss to No. 2 College of Saint Benedict as well as individual losses to No. 1 St. Olaf College and No. 5 University of St. Thomas. 

The Eagles will look to remain ranked next week with three matches slated this week. They face the University of Wisconsin-Superior Wednesday at 7 p.m. at home with a chance to lock up a conference tournament berth before facing Saint Mary's University Friday at 7 p.m. and Martin Luther College Saturday at 12 p.m. in New Ulm, Minnesota.
