The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Lessons from Leaders video series is released Wednesdays in 2019-20 and features Commissioner Corey Borchardt interviewing conference coaches about their success within the conference and at the regional and national levels. The series promotes coaches who have helped enhance the identity and image of the conference as whole. The interviewees include coaches who either won a UMAC regular season or postseason title in 2018-19 or were featured as a UMAC Coach of the Decade during the conference's "10-Year Celebration."

This UMAC Lessons from Leaders episode includes Martin Luther College football head coach Mark Stein sitting down with Corey Borchardt to discuss his program's recent success. Stein led the Knights from a 0-10 record four years ago to a 2018 UMAC regular season title after a perfect 8-0 conference season. The Knights made their first NCAA appearance following a record season of nine wins for the program. Stein earned back-to-back Coach of the Year honors from his peers.

The 2019 season marks Stein's fifth season leading the Knights football program. So far this fall, the Knights are off to a 4-1 overall start and a 3-0 mark in conference play. Stein's Knights have now posted a 18-7 record in the last two seasons and the start of this fall's season.

Commissioner Corey Borchardt discusses several topics with Stein including his leadership responsibilities as a football coach and building a good team around him to help lead to success. Other topics include developing program culture, utilizing strong mentors and relying on values to make decisions.
