Reigning conference champion Saints take men's UMAC Preview
BECKER, Minn.---Reinging Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) men's golf champion College of St. Scholastica deemed itself the team to beat in 2018 after capturing a team win at the UMAC Preview Thursday at Pebble Creek Golf Club.
The Saints tallied a score of 303 (+15) to finish three-strokes ahead of the University of Northwestern that earned runner up with 306 (+18). Nick Mahowald of Northwestern captured medalist honors with a low round of 71 (-1) to finish just one stroke ahead of Liam Butche – who led the winning-Saints with a 72 (E) – and Austin Coyne of Crown College that tied for runner up.

Three Saints finished in the top five including Anthony Ahrens who carded a 74 (+2) for fourth place and Spencer Viita who took fifth with a 75 (+3). Cole Martin rounded out the scoring with a round of 82 (+10).
Northwestern challenged the Saints throughout the day finishing just behind. The Eagles placed three in the top 10 with Mike Vowels earning a tie for sixth with 76 (+4) and Titus Bishop carding 78 (+9) to end in a tie for ninth.
The University of Wisconsin-Superior placed third with a score of 318 (+30), while Bethany Lutheran College was close behind in fourth with 324 (+36). Northland College was just two strokes back in fifth at 326 (+38). Ryan Peterson led the third-place Jackets tied in ninth with Bishop, while the Vikings' saw Petzel tie for sixth with Vowels. Otis Walvatne was 11th for the LumberJacks with a 79 (+7).
Martin Luther College took sixth with 334 (+46) and Crown took seventh with a score of 346 (+58) behind Coyne's even-par day. North Central University finished eighth with 362 (+74) and the University of Minnesota Morris round out the standings with 409 (+121).
The UMAC Men's and Women's Golf Championship will take place at Pebble Creek Oct.4-6.
