10-Year Celebration: UMAC Men's Soccer All-Decade honors
ST. PAUL, Minn.---As part of its 2018-19 "10-Year Celebration," the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) named 11 individual players to the UMAC Men's Soccer All-Decade Team and picked Coach of the Decade and Team of the Decade honorees, the conference announced Thursday.
The 11 individuals named to the All-Decade Team include Greg Borchers (University of Minnesota Morris, 2008-2011), Tom Corcoran (St. Scholastica, 2012-2015), Ben Cullen (St. Scholastica, 2011-2014), Brent Diggs (Minnesota Morris, 2008-2009*), Kyle Farrar (St. Scholastica, 2011, 2014-2016), Andrew Jenkins (St. Scholastica, 2011-2014), Patrick O'Connor (Minnesota Morris, 2008-2009*), Toby Peter (St. Scholastica, 2008-2010*), Sam Reed (St. Scholastica, 2008-2011), Truman Shetler (Crown College, 2011-2014) and Joe Watt (St. Scholastica, 2010-2013). The UMAC recognized College of St. Scholastica head coach Barry Chastey as the Coach of the Decade and the 2014 St. Schoalstica squad as the Men's Soccer Team of the Decade.
All-Decade Team
Greg Borchers, University of Minnesota Morris (2008-2011)
Borchers contributed to a UMAC regular season and two postseason titles for Minnesota Morris during his four-year career and led the team to its first NCAA tournament appearance in 2011. He was a versatile midfielder and defender who earned All-UMAC First Team honors in his final two seasons and garned NSCAA All-Region honors for the Cougars in 2011.
Tom Corcoran, College of St. Scholastica (2012-2015)
Corcoran was part of four-straight regular and postseason UMAC championship teams for St. Scholastica that made four NCAA tournament appearances. The midfielder twice earned All-UMAC First Team honors and was a three-time NSCAA All-Region selection including Second Team in 2015. Corcoran ranks third in program history for career points (165) and career goals (65).
Ben Cullen, College of St. Scholastica (2011-2014)
Cullen was St. Scholastica's top defender during its four-straight regular season UMAC title-winning seasons and three NCAA tournament trips (2012-2014). He was a three-time All-UMAC First Team honoree and was selected UMAC Defensive Player of the Year twice in his career. In 2014, Cullen nabbed NSCAA All-Region First Team honors. He was a Third Team pick in 2013. Cullen ranks second in career games played (88) at St. Scholastica.
Brent Diggs, University of Minnesota Morris (2008-2009)*
During the NCAA Division III era of the UMAC, Diggs was a key member of a Minnesota Morris team that won a postseason and regular season title. The striker was All-UMAC First Team in both seasons and was selected UMAC Player of the Year in 2008. That season, he led the UMAC in goals (19), assists (11) and points (49) and earned NSCAA All-Region accolades. Diggs also led the UMAC in goals (18) in 2009.
Kyle Farrar, College of St. Scholastica (2011, 2014-2016)
Farrar contributed to four UMAC regular season and three tournament titles with St. Scholastica. The forward and midfielder earned All-UMAC First Team honors and NSCAA All-Region awards in each of his four seasons with the Saints. In 2015, Farrar led the UMAC in goals (24) and points (58) to capture UMAC Offensive Player of the Year en route to All-America First Team recognition. He is one of 20 Division III players ever to record 40 goals and 40 assists.
Andrew Jenkins, College of St. Scholastica (2011-2014)
Jenkins was a dominant forward for St. Scholastica during the program's four-straight conference winning seasons. He was a three-time All-UMAC First Team honoree and won the UMAC Offensive Player of the Year honor three times in his career. In 2014, Jenkins was a Third Team D3soccer.com All-American, and twice picked up NSCAA All-Region accolades. In 2013, he lead Division III in points per game and goals per game. Jenkins' 210 career points are the most in Saints' history and fifth-most in Division III history. His 90 career goals are fourth-most in Division III history.
Patrick O'Connor, University of Minnesota Morris (2008-2009)*
O'Connor helped orchestrate the beginning of Minnesota Morris' conference success in men's soccer in 2006. During the NCAA Division III era in 2008 and 2009, the midfielder was a All-UMAC First Team pick and garnered Player of the Year in 2009 to help the Cougars to a regular season conference title. He was the Tournament MVP in 2008 after leading the Cougars to a postseason championship.
Toby Peter, College of St. Scholastica (2008-2010)*
Peter was a part of two UMAC regular season championship St. Scholastica squads during the first three years of the NCAA Division III era and the team's first NCAA tournament appearance in 2010. He was a First Team all-conference selection in each of those three seasons and was named the 2009 UMAC Tournament MVP. The midfielder also holds the St. Scholastica record for game-winning goals in a season (8).
Sam Reed, College of St. Scholastica (2008-2011)
Reed anchored the St. Scholastica defense in goal for four seasons in which the Saints made their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance and captured three UMAC regular season titles. He was a four-time All-UMAC selection and NSCAA All-Region pick in 2011. The keeper recorded a 55-14-10 career record and a remarkable 0.69 goals against average mark. His 55 wins and 38 shutouts are both program records.
Truman Shetler, Crown College (2011-2014)
During his four seasons with Crown, Shetler led the Storm to two UMAC tournament appearances and was selected as a First Team all-conference pick in his final three seasons and was Honorable Mention as a rookie. The forward also shared the UMAC Offensive Player of the Year award in 2014. The three-sport athlete holds Crown career records for points (101) and goals (45).
Joe Watt, College of St. Scholastica (2010-2013)
Watt was a key player in the Saints' three NCAA tournament appearances in his four-year career. The midfielder earned two All-UMAC First Team awards and was the 2013 UMAC Tournament MVP. In both the 2012 and 2013 seasons he led the NCAA in assists per game, and his 33 assists in 2013 are a NCAA record as are his 1.43 assists per game from that same year. Watt's 73 career assists are second-most in Division III history. He is one of 20 Division III players ever to record 40 goals and 40 assists.
Coach of The Decade
Barry Chastey, College of St. Scholastica
Chastey began coaching the St. Scholastica men's soccer team in 2005 and has won 11 UMAC titles during his tenure. In the NCAA Division III era, Chastey's squads have won nine regular season titles and have made six NCAA tournament appearances. He coached the Saints to a 118-game conference unbeaten streak that extended into the 2017 season. Chastey's squads led the NCAA in goals scored for four consecutive seasons (2012-2015). In 13 seasons, Chastey has coached 11 UMAC Player of Year award winners. In 2014, the Saints set a program record for wins in a season (20) under Chastey's direction.
Team of The Decade
College of St. Scholastica, 2014
The 2014 St. Scholastica men's soccer team won a program record 20 games and finished 20-3-0. The Saints posted 15 shutouts during the season and cruised to a fifth-straight UMAC championship. During the regular season, the Saints outscored UMAC opponents 106-7. In non-conference, the Saints defeated No. 21 Wisconsin-Oshkosh and lost in the postseason to No. 19 U of Chicago in a snowstorm. Team members included Daherik Agapito Romero, Jaob Ballheimer, Joey Benz, Jacob Carson, Joe Chell, Trevor Clark, Tom Corcoran, Charlie Crane, Ben Cullen, Sandy Davidson-Hunt, Conan Dillon, Kilen Eilefson, Kyle Erickson, Kyle Farrar, Nate Fisher, Shawayne Folkes, Erik Graham, Riley Grasser-Hemer, Andrew Jenkins, Bryan Johnson, Marat Kudaibergenov, Matt lindemer, Sean Morgan, Ben Phillips, Josh Robak, Chris Rothstein, Zach Spanier, Logan Tamke, Gilbert Tsurwa, Jonny Winter, Andrew Xotta-Dickson. Coach was Barry Chastey.

Throughout 2018-19, the UMAC will recognize individual athletes and one coach for each conference sport on All-Decade Teams and name one team as Team of the Decade. Individuals and teams were nominated by UMAC full and associate member institutions and the teams were selected by a committee of administrators and coaches from the UMAC. The All-Decade recognition is part of the UMAC "10-Year Celebration" commemorating the first 10 years of NCAA Division III membership for the UMAC.
