After losing two games in two days April 19 and 20, the champion Saints rebounded to finish the UMAC season 8-0 and capture yet another conference crown following a critical sweep with a Crown College squad that started the conference slate 8-0. With two victories Sunday, the Saints finished with a 14-2 conference record and will play the third game of the day Thursday against the winner of No. 4 Crown and No 5 Bethany Lutheran College.
No. 5 Bethany Lutheran managed a split with No. 4 Crown on the final day of regular season play Monday dropping the Storm into the No. 4 spot and setting up a rematch for Thursday. Both squads finished with a conference mark of 10-6, but the Storm swept No. 3 University of Northwestern to earn the tiebreaker and higher seed.
The No. 5 Vikings had another solid season to make a second-straight tournament appearance. The young squad earned an early split with No. 2 Wisconsin-Superior to help them into the playoff hunt from the get-go. The No. 4 Storm started hot but slowed in the final week. The win Monday over Bethany Lutheran ended a four-game losing streak for Crown.
The University of Wisconsin-Superior had a stellar season finishing 12-4 against league opponents to claim the No. 2 spot in the tournament. The Yellowjackets won five of their final six games of the season and also boasted a six-game winning streak earlier in UMAC play. The only team this season to beat the 'Jackets twice was the top-seeded Saints just over a week ago.
The No. 2 Yellowjackets will face a No. 3 Northwestern squad that suffered two losses in Superior early in the conference season. The Eagles finished 11-5 with a big sweep over No. 5 Bethany Lutheran and a split with the champion season to mark a stellar campaign. This season, the Eagles will look to make another tournament run after making it to the championship round with the Saints a year ago.
Thursday's opening action will see four games with all five teams playing. No. 4 will play at 10 a.m. against No. 5 followed immediately by No. 2 Wisconsin-Superior vs. No. 3 ... at 12 p.m. Game three will see No. 1 St. Scholastica take on the winner of game one at 2 p.m. before the first elimination game at 4 p.m. All tournament games will take place at St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota.
