No. 4 Northwestern defends home court in UMAC women's quarterfinal win
ST. PAUL, Minn.---After two seasons of missing the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) women’s basketball tournament, the College of St. Scholastica played its way into the postseason as the No. 5 seed while the rest of the field has remained consistent for the last two seasons. The newcomer also faced the tough challenge of hitting the road for quarterfinal action Monday against familiar foe No. 4 University of Northwestern.
When the tournament kicked off, the tides were in favor of the home team as the No. 4 Eagles battled through a closely contested contest through nearly three quarters before pulling away for a 52-39 win over the No. 5 Saints Monday on their home court.

The game started off in favor of the Eagles and looked like a blowout could ensue as they jumped to a quick 8-0 lead in the first three-plus minutes of play. The Saints came storming back quickly though before knotting the game at 15-15 with five to play in the first half. The Saints eventually took a one-point lead that spurred a 6-0 run from the Eagles who took a lead 23-18 at the half.
Less than four minutes into the second half, the Saints managed to pull within two before the Eagles eventually pushed their margin back to nine at the end of the third en route to victory. The victorious Eagles were led by Taryn Tumbleson with 12 points and eight rebounds to lead all scorers on the night. Alex Peterson also recorded in double figures with 11 points to add to the offense.
Danielle Cieluch led the Saints offensively with 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. Holly Van Kempen led all players with a game-high 12 rebounds.
