Northwestern shuts out Wisconsin-Superior for UMAC women's soccer tournament title
ST. PAUL, Minn.--- Following a dominant win in the semifinal round of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) women's soccer postseason tournament Wednesday, the University of Northwestern came up with another shutout performance over the University of Wisconsin-Superior to win the 2018 tournament championship Saturday.
The Eagles posted a 2-0 win over the Yellowjackets to claim their first postseason title since 2010. Northwestern will also make the program's second NCAA tournament appearance after earning the conference's automatic qualifying bid.

Northwestern's victory didn't come easy against a Wisconsin-Superior squad that had shutout its six previous opponents. In the first half, the Eagles had several quality scoring opportunities and launched 12 shots toward the Yellowjacket net forcing Madison Gutekunst to make six saves. The Eagles' defense held the Yellowjackets to just one shot in the 45 minutes as they controlled the pace of the game from the very start.
In the second half, the Eagles finally broke through in the 60th minute when Linley Norman made a cross for Emily Currie who buried a header past Gutekunst to put the Eagles up 1-0. The Eagles added another goal in the 69th minute from RJ Mullin on an assist from Alexis Albrecht to give the Eagles security en route to victory.
The Eagles attempted 16 shots in the second half and Gutekunst made four saves for a total of 10 to lead the Yellowjackets. Norman and Anna Welch led the Eagle offense with five shots a piece. Samantha Colombo made two saves in net for the Eagles for her second-straight shutout of the tournament.
Currie was named the tournament MVP for her breakthrough game-winning goal for the Eagles. The Eagles improve to 11-6-4 overall, while Wisconsin-Superior ends its historic season 8-11-3.

ncaa.com.
