SUPERIOR, Wis.---For the second time in three days, the No. 4 seed University of Wisconsin-Superior and No. 5 seed University of Minnesota Morris would meet in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) women's soccer Monday, this time in tournament action.
Though the results was the same – Wisconsin-Superior won in shutout fashion – the results came much differently as the game ended 0-0 and the Yellowjackets' needed penalty kicks to advance past the Cougars in their first-ever UMAC postseason appearance.

The opening game of the UMAC women's soccer playoffs started off with both teams playing defense in the first half with just five total saves on seven shots between the two squads. In the second half, though, the Cougars poured on the offense with 11 total shots forcing Yellowjacket keeper Madison Gutekunst to make four saves to keep the game scoreless after 90 minutes.
The defense kicked in again in the overtime period with both squads managing just two total shots each and one on goal each, forcing the second UMAC game of the day to head to penalty kicks after the men's quarterfinal was decided on kick earlier in the afternoon.
In the shootout, Wisconsin-Superior led off with a score by Sarah Fjeran before Minnesota Morris responded with a conversion by Sam Tate. Each of the next kickers missed for their respective squads to see the score even at 1-1. The next three shooters for each team converted their attempts to even the score at 4-4 after five players a side.
The pressure was on now with each team needing a score or a stop. Claire Smith scored next for the Yellowjackets before Gutekunst came up with a save on the next Cougar shooter to send her team on to the semifinal round. She finished the game with eight saves for her fourth-straight shutout. Bailey Tschida of the Cougars ended her day with four saves in the shutout performance.
No. 4 Wisconsin-Superior will head across Lake Superior Wednesday to face bridge rival No. 1 seed College of St. Scholastica at 1:30 p.m. in Duluth, Minnesota. The other semifinal game will feature No. 3 seed Northland College at No. 2 University of Northwestern for a 5 p.m. tilt in St. Paul.
