NEW ULM, Minn.---Just two days ago Northland College narrowly defeated Martin Luther College to clinch the fifth-and-final spot in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) women's soccer tournament, setting up another meeting between the two foes just 48 hours later.

Home field advantage didn't seem to be much of a factor in the long run, though, as No. 4 seed Martin Luther couldn't battle past the cold and windy conditions as No. 5 Northland scored a late second-half goal to win the quarterfinal matchup Monday to punch a ticket to the semifinal round Wednesday.

Facing the wind in the first half, Northland fought for every inch of ground against the Knights and managed to make it to halftime tied at 0-0. In the first 45 minutes alone, the Knights used the 40mph winds to their advantage as they dumped 17 shots toward the goal. The LumberJills' Megan Jordan managed to stop all 12 shots that made it to the goal in the half.

In the second half, the LumberJills mustered some energy and gained some momentum with the wind to their backs. Finally in the 74th minute, Shona Aird broke the deadlock as she buired a rebound in front of the keeper that came off a free kick.

Jordan came up big managing two saves in the second half to seal the shutout win and move the LumberJills into the semifinal round. Erin Feddersen posted three saves in goal for the Knights.

The LumberJills will make another trip south Wednesday to face No. 1 seed University of Northwestern at 4 p.m. in St. Paul. The other semifinal game will feature No. 3 seed University of Minnesota Morris at No. 2 College of St. Scholastica for an 11 a.m. tilt in Duluth, Minnesota.
