No. 1 Saints, No. 2 Eagles win to set up UMAC tennis rematch in tournament championship

MINNEAPOLIS---The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) women’s tennis postseason tournament got off to a thrilling with the top two teams in No. 1 College of St. Scholastica and No. 2 University of Northwestern-St. Paul emerging victorious Friday evening at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center. 
 
The No. 1 Saints downed the No. 4 seed Bethany Lutheran College 9-0 while No. 2 Northwestern took down No. 3 Martin Luther College by the same score of 9-0 to set up an intriguing championship match between the Saints and Eagles Saturday.

No. 1 St. Scholastica defeats No. 4 Bethany Lutheran, 9-0 
The No. 1-seeded Saints showed no signs of slowing down after locking up the UMAC regular season title last weekend as they cruised to a shutout win over No. 4 Bethany Lutheran. Jessica Solberg and Madeleine Scanlan earned a shutout at No. 1 doubles as did Alexia Brascuglia and Katelyn Rice at the No. 3 spot. Elise Hauer and Daniela Rojas needed to work a little harder at No. 2 doubles winning 8-3.
 
In singles, Sarah Coryell and Rice earned straight-set 6-0 wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots, respectively. Solberg won at the top spot with a 6-1, 6-0 win, while Scanlan won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Hauer took victory at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 decision.
 
At the No. 4 spot, Rojas was challenged by Madalyn Elmquist as she dropped the first set 6-2 to the Vikings’ challenger. Then, Rojas took the second set 6-0 to force a third-set tiebreaker that she won 13-11.
 
With the victory, the Saints have now won 12-straight matches and improve to 19-5 overall this season.

No. 2 Northwestern defeats No. 3 Martin Luther, 9-0
The No. 2-seeded Eagles rebounded from their regular season-ending loss in impressive fashion taking down the No. 3 Knights in a sweep. At the top doubles spot, Karen Moe and Jessica Henke cruised to an 8-0 win, while Tina Matetich and Emily Knight won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. Rachel Bostrom and Nikki Edin fourght off Elizabeth Broring and Sophia Birner for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
 
Following the doubles sweep, Bostrom led off singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 6 spot before Knight scored a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 5 singles. Moe continued her dominant play at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 decision, while Brooke Lapinski took No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-1.
 
Matetich had a bit of a challenge at No. 3 singles battling for the first set 6-4 before taking the second 6-0. Henke also had a battle at No. 2 singles – she took the opener 6-2 but had to comeback after being down 3-0 to take the second set 7-5.
 
With the victory, the Eagles improve to 22-6 overall this season.
