No. 1 Wisconsin-Superior rolls to first UMAC playoff title
SUPERIOR, Wis.---In its first season as a member of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) the University of Wisconsin-Superior has dominated women's basketball winning the regular season title in undefeated fashion. So, it was fitting that the No. 1 seed Yellowjackets controlled play from the very beginning of their first playoff final Saturday night.
The No. 1 Yellowjackets claimed their first UMAC playoff championship with an impressive 58-34 win over No. 2 University of Northwestern-St. Paul on their home court. With the victory, the Yellowjackets earned the UMAC's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA tournament.
The Yellowjackets came out ready to win as they opened with a 5-0 run and never looked back. They held a 42-20 advantage at the half and kept building en route to their 24th win this season. Northwestern's season ends at 21-6.
Just as they did in the semifinal round, the Yellowjackets used big performances from the reserves with five players coming out to add to their 28 points off the bench. Wisconsin-Superior also shot 46.4 percent from the field and held a 39-31 advantage on the boards.
The Yellowjackets were again led in consecutive games off the bench by Sarah Lekson who earned the Tournament's Most Valuable Player Award. The junior scored 15 points after shooting 7-of-9 from the floor and adding three rebounds, three assists and a steal. She finished her two tournament games with 29 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Justine Larson also scored in double figures with 10 points for the Yellowjackets shooting 5-of-9 from the floor. Hailey Kontny added to the offense with nine points and Allie Nelson had eight.
For the Eagles, Amy Berglund scored nine points and Regan Cooper had eight. Cooper also had a team-high six rebounds.
