No. 4 Cougars outlast No. 5 Yellow Jackets for UMAC quarterfinal win
MORRIS, Minn.---After a regular season split between the University of Minnesota Morris and the University of Wisconsin-Superior, the opening quarterfinal game of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) men's basketball playoffs was sure to be a thriller from the very beginning. Douglas finished the night with a season-high 37 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. The Cougar star ignited the Cougar offense with 21 points on a 7-of-10 performance in the opening half. He ended the night shooting 10-of-18 from the field and went 17-of-22 from the charity stripe.
The game opened in favor of the Yellowjackets who jumped out to an eight-point lead and were up seven with just under 10 to play. The Cougars then went on a 16-8 run over the next seven minutes to regain the lead before ending the half with a 33-27 lead.
The Cougars started off the second half with a 9-0 run in the opening 1:45 of play to take a 15 point lead before eventually pushing it to as many as 20 with 7:45 remaining in the game.
Just as the Cougars looked as if they were in control, the Yellowjackets slowly chipped away at the lead before making it a two-point game twice in the final 29 seconds thanks to two clutch 3-pointers from Marquise Shay. The Cougar defense held on, though, to help claim the team's 13th win of the season and end the Yellowjackets' season at 12-14.
In addition to Douglas' big night, the Cougars also got 15 points from Tyler Ukkelberg and 14 from John Haseman on a perfect 6-o-f-6 shooting performance from the floor. For the Yellowjackets, junior Zach Schradle poured in 24 points of his own while senior Brian Lindblom ended his career with 20 points and recorded his 1,000th-career point.
Monday's quarterfinal sets the stage for two exciting semifinals Wednesday. Quarterfinal winner No. 4 Minnesota Morris will take on No. 1 College of St. Scholastica at 7:30 p.m. in Duluth, Minnesota, while No. 2 University of Northwestern-St. Paul will host No. 3 North Central University at 5:30 p.m. in St. Paul.
