Lindquist, Wisconsin-Superior capture first UMAC men's cross country title

BENSON, Minn.---After being edged out by just five points last season in its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) debut, the University of Wisconsin-Superior men's cross country team finally earned the glory it was searching for as the talented squad raced to its first-ever UMAC Championship title Saturday. 

Led by senior star Jackson Lindquist, the Yellowjackets placed four runners in the top 15 to finish with 42 points, which was 15 better than runner up Martin Luther College. With the team victory, the YellowJackets ended the College of St. Scholastica's winning-streak at seven-straight men's cross country championship titles.

Lindquist crossed the line first out of 90 competitors with a time of 25:43.5 to capture his first-ever UMAC individual title. He was joined in the top five by junior Jordan Koski who crossed the line in 26:44.1 to place fourth. Rookie Harrison Hirsch was just two second behind Koski with a time of 26:46.5 to round out the top five. 

The Yellowjackets saw Rand Bieri take 15th, while Zach Mazurek finished out the scoring runners for the champion Yellowjackets taking 17th. 

Martin Luther edged out the University of Minnesota Morris by 10 points thanks to four individual top 15 performances. Rookie Ben Bitter crossed the line in 26:57.7 to lead the Knights taking sixth overall. Ryan Gurgel was eighth with a time of 27:09.5. Justin Wilkens was less than 10 seconds behind Gurgel to place 10th while Darian Schnose took 14th.

Minnesota Morris tllied 67 points for third to bump St. Scholastica to fourth with 76 points. Senior Chalmer COmbellick of the COugars repeated at the UMAC runner up with a time of 26:06.2 to lead his squad. Tyler Sassenberg added to the Cougars' strong performance with a ninth-place time of 27:13.0. 

St. Scholastica was led by senior Jacob Gallagher who placed third overall with a time of 26:21.4. Cam Pearson and Easton Foss helped boost the Saints taking 11th and 13th, respectively.  

Jackson Peterson of the University of Northwestern placed seventh clocking 27:00.8 to help the Eagles to a solid fifth place finish at 83 points. Wil Maki also had a strong race finishing in 12th place. 

The standings rounded out with Northland College in sixth (196), Bethany Lutheran College in seventh (200), North Central University in eighth (219) and Crown College in ninth (260).
