ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern and the College and of St. Scholastica and will meet in Saturday’s Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Women’s Soccer Championship Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
The two teams shared identical 9-1 UMAC records during the season to be named UMAC Regular Season Co-champions. However, the Eagles earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament by beating the Saints 1-0 during conference play.
Second-seeded St. Scholastica earned their spot in Saturday’s Championship contest by defeating third-seeded University of Minnesota Morris (7-3 UMAC) 2-0 in Wednesday’s semifinal contest in Duluth. The Saints had 11 shots on goal on the day with Alexi Bopray leading the Saints with one goal and one assist. Becca Rancour also netted one goal for the Saints while goalkeeper Kelsey Reeves added two save to shutout the Cougars.
The Eagles topped fourth-seeded Northland College (6-3-1 UMAC) 3-2 in a hard fought semifinal contest to advance to Saturday’s Tournament Championship. The Eagles led the LumberJills 1-0 heading into the half but Northland answered with two quick Madeleine Wieland goals to start the half to take the lead 2-1. The Eagles then scored again to tie up 2-2. Northwestern’s Katie Meinke scored the game winner for the Eagles at 85:45.
The winner of Saturday’s UMAC Tournament Championship will earn the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
