UMAC distributes 302 academic all-conference awards for winter and spring sports

ST. PAUL -- 302 winter and spring student-athletes from member institutions earned Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Academic All-Conference honors the league announced on Tuesday. Those award-winners join the 326 fall individual academic all-conference awards to account for a total of 628 accolades throughout the 2011-2012 academic year.

To be eligible for nomination, student-athletes must meet the following criteria:

1. Post a 3.50 or better semester grade point average based on a 4.0 scale.
2. Compete in the sport in which he or she is nominated in the season that corresponds with the selection.

The College of St. Scholastica, who claimed the most individual winter and spring honorees in both 2009-2010 and 2010-2011, remained on top in 2011-12 with 72 academic all-conference honorees. As a league, the UMAC fell just five individuals short of its all-time winter and spring high number of 307 academic all-conference awards, which was set in 2009-10.

Northwestern College came in second with 56 academic all-conference winners, while Martin Luther College followed with 45 individual accolades. The University of Minnesota, Morris was fourth with 37 awards.

Women’s track and field took the top spot in terms of the individual sports, claiming 56 awards. With 48 academic accolades, women’s basketball followed close behind women’s track and field while baseball took third place with 43. All but one of the eight winter and spring sports boasted 30 or more individual accolades.

In the team academic all-conference awards competition, Martin Luther claimed the best grade point averages (GPA) in four sports including softball, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s track and field. Northwestern took two of the remaining four spots (men's track and field, men's basketball), with Presentation College and Northland College claiming the top GPA in baseball and women’s basketball. UMAC-sponsored sports that occur in the winter and spring and their corresponding top academic teams are listed below.
