NEWS AND NOTES
Bethany Lutheran College:
College of St. Scholastica:
Jonah Dahlman and Brett Tester each recorded double-doubles in Friday's win over North Central. It was the first time two Saints recorded a double-double in a game since Jan. 29, 2005 when Josh Gosar and David Kapuan did it. It is the 10th time since 1994 that is has happened.
Senior quarterback Alex Thiry and senior offensive lineman Stephen Voelkner picked up some more postseason honors last week as both were named Beyond Sports College Network Second Team All-Americans.
Crown College:
Martin Luther College:
Men's basketball player Galen Holzhueter leads the conference and ranks 38th in the nation with an average of 20.3 points per game. Holzhueter has scored at least 24 points in six of the Knights' nine games this season, and is coming off a career best 30 points in MLC's last game against Wartburg on December 16.
Erica Babinec led the women's basketball team in scoring in the non-conference schedule with an average of 15.9 points per game, and enters the final two months of her career with 1344 career points, 207 points shy of the school's all-time record held by her sister Emma Babinec.
Both the men's and women's basketball teams for MLC will see action for the first time in nearly a month on Tuesday, January 10, when the Knights host Bethany Lutheran. Both teams last played on December 16 against Wartburg.
Northland College:
Northwestern College:
The Northwestern women’s basketball team currently boasts the best free throw percentage in all of the NCAA Division III at 81.9 percent. Four other teams between Divisions I and II are currently above that mark. The Eagles are also seventh in the NCAA Division III in three-point field goal percentage.
Both of Northwestern’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will join the other eight UMAC schools in conference action starting this week (specifically Tuesday at Crown). Both Eagle squads have gone 9-1 in conference-opening games in the last 10 years
Presentation College:
University of Minnesota, Morris:
The Cougar women’s basketball team has won 27 consecutive UMAC games, the third longest winning streak in NCAA Division III. Only Babson at 43 and Mount St. Mary’s at 29 hold longer conference winning streaks.
The Cougars open UMAC play on Tuesday with Presentation, the last UMAC team to beat them, doing so in the postseason. The Saints topped the Cougars 63-42 in the second round of the 2010 UMAC Tournament.
Derek Schmidt extended his streak of double-digit scoring games to a career long seven after back-to-back 10-point nights last week. In nine games this season, Schmidt has scored in double figures in eight of them.
With three UMAC games this week, the Cougars will be looking to open league play 3-0 for the fifth time in the last eight seasons. They will also look to with their UMAC opener for the sixth time in nine years in the conference.
