HEADLINES

Lake Mills, Wis. freshmen creating immediate impact for Martin Luther

A pair of freshmen from Lake Mills, Wis. are bringing energy and an immediate impact to the Martin Luther College women's basketball team, who enters this weekend's UMAC play tied for first place. Daniel Kerwin of the New Ulm Journal detailed the journey of Alex Anthon and Hannah Hackbarth, who are over 300 miles from their hometown, yet feel right at home on the Knights women's basketball team this season.

UMAC Assistant Commissioner Regan Tekavec Joins Concordia-St. Paul Athletic Administration

Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Assistant Commissioner Regan Tekavec has accepted an assistant athletic director position at Concordia University-St. Paul, effective February 1. Tekevec was the league’s first-ever assistant commissioner in a two-year position made possible primarily through the NCAA Division III Ethnic Minority & Women’s Internship grant program.

NEWS AND NOTES

Bethany Lutheran College:

The men’s basketball team won an overtime thriller Friday night against Minnesota-Morris 79-75. Four Viking players scored in double figures.

After the Vikings win over Presentation Saturday 67-49 Bethany remains the only men’s basketball team to have an undefeated conference record at 5-0.

The women’s basketball team defeated Presentation Saturday 69-64, four Viking players scored in double figures with Shelby Weiderhoeft recording a double-double.

Friday night is “faculty and staff appreciation” at the basketball games. In addition to recognition and prizes, our students are voting on which faculty or staff member they would like to see be an “honorary assistant coach” and sit on the bench with Coach Balza during the men’s game.

College of St. Scholastica:

Men's basketball's Brett Tester became the 10th Saint in program history to record over 1,000 career points in Saturday's victory over Northwestern.

Women's basketball's 53-point win over Crown on Friday matches its largest margin of victory in series history and its 42-point victory over Northwestern on Saturday is its largest margin of victory in that series' history.

Women's basketball's Laura Amys is only three blocks shy of tying the program record for career blocks. She currently sits at 126 for her career.


Crown College:

Anthijuan Beeks Jr. collected 18 rebounds against North Central in a non-conference game, and finished just 3 assists shy of a triple-double.

Taylor Jones went 5-6 from three point range in Crown’s win over Northland.

Jones also recorded 12 steals in 3 games this week to run his conference leading total to 42 (22 in five conference games).

Martin Luther College:

The MLC women's basketball team secured its first ever 5-0 start in the UMAC Saturday with a buzzer-beater from Kirsten Michael against UMM, snapping the Cougars' 29-game conference win streak in the process. 

First-year player Hannah Hackbarth scored a career-high 23 points in the win over the Cougars, nearly doubling her previous high of 12.

Erica Babinec had her fourth 20-point game of the season at Presentation Friday night as she went over the 1,400 point mark for her career.

Senior Justin Danell set a new career-high with 19 points in the men's game at Presentation Friday night.

Galen Holzhueter scored 26 points against Presentation. He has now scored at least 20 points nine times on the season, three of which came in UMAC games.

Northland College: 

Northwestern College:

Northwestern’s women’s basketball team has been amongst the top three teams in the country (NCAA Division III) in free throw shooting throughout the seven national statistics reports since Dec. 11. The Eagles’ starting five has a collective free throw shooting rate of 84 percent this season.

With a current average of 18.3 points per game this season, Northwestern men’s basketball junior Wade Chitwood is on pace to be the top scoring individual in an Eagles jersey since Jeff VerSteeg averaged 20.2 points per game in 2004-05.

Presentation College:  

Sophomore guard, Hannah Philllips, had an impressive performance in all three contests this week, including putting up a double-double against TBC with 37 points, 10 rebounds and 12 steals which tied the school’s record for most steals in a game. She also had 25 points against Martin Luther, and 23 against Bethany Lutheran.
