Yellowjackets edge Eagles to win UMAC Men's Golf Preview

ALEXANDRIA, Minn.---Throughout the 2016 season, Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) men's golf was very competitive at the top with number of teams with potential to take conference title. With just one month until the UMAC tournament rolls around that could easily be the case – but for now the University of Wisconsin-Superior is the team to beat after it captured thee UMAC Men's Golf Preview event by two strokes Wednesday at the Alexandria Golf Club.

The Yellowjackets took spots 2-3-4 in the individual standings to finish the day with a stellar score of 300 (+12) to edge out reigning conference champion the University of Northwestern that finished second with a score of 302 (+14) The Eagles did card the top individual score of the day with Nick Mahowald finishing with a score of 70 (-2). 

Wisconsin-Superior captured its second-straight team victory of the season – the Yellowjackets won the Twin Ports Collegiate Saturday – with the second lowest team round in the league this season. Joey Cummings led the Yellowjackets with the runner up score at 72 (E), while Ryan Peterson was two strokes back at 74 (+2) and Chase Hoople was four strokes back at 74 (+4) to finish third and fourth overall, respectively. Olle Sedellius and Tyler Smith rounded out the scoring for the winning squad with scores of 78 (+6) that were tied for ninth.

In addition to Mahowald's tournament-best score, the Eagles got three other top 10 scores – Titus Bishop and Michael Vowels each recorded 77 (+5) in a tie for sixth. Caleb Johnson rounded out the scoring with a 78 (+6) to help the Eagles to a strong finish. 

The College of St. Scholastica finished third and 12 strokes behind Northwestern with a team total of 314 (+26). Two Saints placed in the top 10 with reigning UMAC Player of the Week Spencer Viita tallying 77 (+5) and Liam Buchte carding 78 (+6) for ninth. 

The top 10 finishers also included Jordan Petzel of Bethany Lutheran College in fourth with a 76 (+4) and Sam Havnen of Bethany Lutheran and Andrew Moorse of Crown College both at 78 (+6). 

Bethany Lutheran moved up from its starting spot at seventh to fourth with a score of 318 (+30) that was just four strokes from third. The remaining teams including Northland College in fifth at 337 (+49), Crown in sixth at 352 (+64), Martin Luther College in seventh with a 357 (+69), the University of Minnesota Morris in eighth with a score of 359 (+71) and North Central University in ninth with 361 (+73). 

The UMAC teams will return to the Alexandria Golf Club for the UMAC Championships beginning Thursday, Oct. 5 for the three-day tournament. The championship team will earn the conference's bid to the NCAA Championships in May.
