UMAC honors 347 winter/spring student-athletes with Academic All-Conference honors
ST. PAUL, Minn.---With conclusion of 2016-17, the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) recognized student-athletes for their performance both on the field of play and in the classroom with 347 individuals earning the Academic All-Conference distinction for the winter and spring seasons. Added to a record number 513 athletes honored in the fall, the UMAC awarded a record total of 860 academic awards this year surpassing the previous record set last year, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Individuals who earn a 3.5 or better grade point average (GPA) or better during their respective semesters of competition are recognized with the prestigious honor. The 347 student-athletes awarded for the winter and spring sports seasons just missed breaking the record of 353 set last spring.
Martin Luther College again boasted the highest number of student-athletes recognized as the Knights led all institutions with 60 awards. For the year, the Knights compiled a conference-best 152 academic all-conference nods. The College of St. Scholasticawas just behind with 57 honorees for the winter and spring for a yearly total of 141 awards that are also second-most. The University of Northwestern rounded out the top three with 51 awards for the session and an academic yearly total of 118.
For the winter and spring team, women's sports to the top two spots for number of individual winners as women's track and field had the greatest representation with 59 student-athlete awards, while softball was a close second with 55. Baseball and men's basketball each recorded 48 honorees, while women's basketball had 46.
In the team competition, Martin Luther claimed five of the eight awards which are given to the team with the top team GPA for their respective corresponding semesters. The Knights' women's tennis team recorded the top team GPA among all teams with an impressive 3.755 mark. The awards for baseball (3.076), women's basketball (3.6574), softball (3.686), men's tennis (3.358) and men's tennis (3.358) also went to Martin Luther. The Knights won eight of the team awards for the 2016-17 year.
Northwestern won two team awards claiming men's basketball (3.265) and women's track and field (3.482), while Bethany Lutheran College claimed men's track and field with a 3.174 team mark. For the winter and spring, four of the winners from the six sports with playoffs were also qualifiers for the UMAC tournament.
