ST. PAUL, Minn.---Each Wednesday throughout the year, the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) is featuring student-athletes in its new profile series the "UMAC Wednesday Wrap with..." Student-athletes share their perspective on being a student-athlete at their institution, in the UMAC and in Division III.
This week features track and field athletes Jacob Gallagher and Hannah Russert from the College of St. Scholastica.

What do you enjoy most about competing in the UMAC?
I enjoy that competitors become friends, and we all grow to know each other.
What do you enjoy most about being a student-athlete at St. Scholastica?
I love the development of both physical and mental characteristics. It really makes me a better overall person.
Tell us about a unique experience you've had as a student at St. Scholastica.
I currently am interning with Team USA Minnesota, a small group of professional distance runners in the Twin Cities.
Who has been the most influential on your athletics career and why?
Steve Magness, the head coach for University of Houston, has been a huge influence through his book, articles, and podcast. He completely reshaped how I think about my craft, success, and training.

What does it mean to you to be a Division III student-athlete?
With being a student at the top of my priority list, being a Division III student-athlete was the perfect fit. I still get to focus on schoolwork with the bonus of being able to compete in track and field. .
Tell us about a unique experience you've had as a student at St. Scholastica.
This past summer I was accepted to conduct research in the Neuromuscular and Active Aging Lab at the University of Miami. I used EMG signals to determine the amount of electrical activity produced during repetitions on specified weightlifting machines.
What is something most people don't know about you?
I was a member of the state champion dairy judging team for FFA in high school.
Who has been the most influential on your athletics career and why?
Miranda Moen, a friend from high school, has been the most influential on my track career. If it wasn't for her I never would have tried hurdling and wouldn't be as dedicated and committed to the sport as I am today.
