St. Scholastica slated for first in 2016 UMAC Football Preseason Coaches' Poll
ST. PAUL, Minn.---After completing another 9-0 season against Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opponents in 2015, the College of St. Scholastica football team is in the driver’s seat heading into what promises to be another exciting fall. The Saints were selected as a unanimous first-place finisher in the 2016 UMAC Football Preseason Coaches’ Poll announced Wednesday.

The Saints made their fifth-straight NCAA postseason appearance in Head Coach Kurt Ramler’s second season at the helm a year ago. In his third year leading St. Scholastica, Ramler will look to help the Saints capture a share of the UMAC regular season title for the sixth-straight year.
Since 2010, the Saints have gone 50-0 when scoring at least 20 points. If their 2015 statistics are any indicator of continued success, the Saints could be in line for their fourth-straight undefeated UMAC season in 2016. In 2015, the Saints outscored UMAC opponents 315-89 and averaged 35 points per game in conference play.
Offensively, the Saints led the league with 245.8 passing yards per game and had 19 different players catch a pass from four different quarterbacks. They could be poised for similar or even better numbers this year – seniors Kyle Stepka and Dakota Paulson both return after averaging near a 55-percent completion rate in UMAC play. Paulson tallied eight touch downs in six games played before missing the remainder of the season due to injury, while Stepka compiled 1,297 passing yards and 14 TDs in eight games.
The Saints also return First Team All-UMAC selection Hunter Thompson at wide receiver. The junior led all of Division in yards per catch (25.6) during his sophomore campaign and finished the year with a league-best 75.0 yards per game receiving against UMAC opponents.
Defensively, the Saints will see a significant impact due to the loss of four UMAC First Team all-conference honorees. The most obvious loss may be that of linebacker Alex Mangan – the 2015 Defensive Player of the Year and D3Football.com All-American Honorable Mention – who set a program record for tackles for loss (37.5) and tallied 93 in his final season as a Saint.
The Saints will also miss double-threat Mitch Ejnik who was the 2015 Special Teams Player of the Year and a First Team All-UMAC award winner as both a linebacker and punt returner. Ejnik averaged 17.1 yards per punt return and collected 67 tackles for the Saints’ defense.
To fill in the gaps defensively, the Saints will rely on Mason Bloomquist and Jason Senger who were both Second Team selections as juniors. Kenneth Jenkins also returns as both a defensive back and return man after picking up 45 tackles a year ago.
Though the Saints – who earned 81 points in the poll – have seen continued success in recent years, the University of Northwestern will look to unseat the Saints from the conference throne after finishing second in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll with 72 points.
The last time the Saints lost a UMAC game, it was by one point at the hands of Northwestern on Oct. 6, 2012. To make the rivalry even more dramatic, in the last four seasons, games between the Saints and Eagles have been decided by a difference of just 22 total points. A year ago, St. Scholastica narrowly defeated Northwestern 13-7 in a defensive battle to decide the conference title.
Defense was the calling card for the Eagles in 2015 and should play a huge factor in whether they can knock off the Saints in 2016. The Eagles may have lost two-time All-UMAC First Teamers Luke Summerlot and Nathan Van Zee – the two combined for 27 tackles for loss – but they return fellow First Team picks Ben Greener and Nick Swore at linebacker and defensive back, respectively.
On offense, the Eagles will need to find a replacement for Second Team quarterback Grant Schoen. On the upside, though, sophomore running back BJ Foster and senior receiver Cody Carlson both return to lead an Eagles’ team that converted 86 percent of the time in the red zone last season.
Greenville College was a surprising pick for third (57 points) after placing eighth in the standings just a year ago. The Panthers lost three games by six points or fewer in 2015 and return a solid core of offensive players who contributed to the league-best 3,893 yards of total offense. Leading the way will be senior All-UMAC First Team running back Hamid Camara who added 1,010 yards rushing and nine touchdowns to Greenville’s league-best numbers in rushing yards (2,306).
Defensively, Greenville will need to find an answer for replacing First Team linebackers Robert Deering and Joey Silva who tied for second in UMAC tackles for loss (14.5) in 2015. First Team All-UMAC defensive back Nicolas Morrow accounted for 58.5 tackles last season and should help the Panthers interrupt opponent offenses this season.
Westminster College placed third a year ago with a 6-3 conference mark, but finished just one point behind Greenville in the poll for fourth (56 points). The Blue Jays will rely heavily on reigning UMAC Offensive Player of the Year Latif Adams. As a sophomore, Adams was the lone rusher to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in UMAC games and he finished averaging a monstrous 152.1 yards per game. Westminister will also see Trent White return from injury to lead the team at quarterback behind an offensive line that lost three starters.
Just one point separated the next three teams in the poll as Eureka College and MacMurray College tied for fifth with 43 points while Crown College took seventh with 42 points.
Eureka College is set for a solid season after finishing tied for fifth with a 4-5 conference mark in 2015. The Red Devils return 18 starters from a year ago including three All-UMAC Second Team selections to a defense that was third in the league in yards (287.4) and points (180) allowed per game. They will look to add stability at quarterback and playmaking ability at wide receiver with a deep recruiting class.
In two seasons, Chris Douglas – who was named UMAC Coach of the Year in 2015 – has lead a dramatic turnaround for MacMurray College jumping from 10th (0-9) in 2013 to fourth (5-4) in 2015. The Highlanders will look to repeat similar success led by First Team All-UMAC quarterback Coy Dorothy who averaged a league-best 201.2 passing yards per conference game. He will need a surrounding cast to step up, though, as three All-UMAC selections at running back and receiver were lost in the offseason.
Crown College was amongst the three-way tie for fifth last season and hopes for offensive success with the return of star running backs Josh Edlund and Matt Michaud who combined for 14 TD in 2015. First Team receiver and 2015 receptions (53) leader Trey Pence also returns to lead an offense that no longer has All-UMAC quarterback Brandon McCormick. Crown does return players who accounted for 26 of its 30 touchdowns last season, though.
In just one season, Rob Cushman took the University of Minnesota Morris from 0-10 in 2014 to 4-5 in the UMAC in 2015. His Cougars were picked to finish eighth (30 points) and will look to continue improving with a group of returning offensive talent at wide receiver. Cushman will rely on Colin Everson and Clayton Douvier – who combined for 24.5 tackles for loss – to replace All-UMAC picks on defense.
Martin Luther College – picked ninth (14 points) in the poll – will look to jump in the standings from ninth place with the return of Josh Arndt at receiver – he led NCAA Division III in yards per reception before a season-ending injury. The Knights hope T.J. Babinec can step up to replace First Team All-UMAC quarterback Matt Olson to ignite the team’s offense.
Iowa Wesleyan University rounded out the poll with 12 points and hopes first-year coach Mike Richtman will lead it to a steady climb up the standings with the help of a 61-player recruiting class. Richtman also returns two of the team’s leading tacklers from a year ago in Darryl Smith and Andy Terrell to help add to its defense strength.
Intriguing Matchups
The Division III football season kicks off Saturday, Sept. 3 highlighted by St. Scholastica’s matchup with No. 9-ranked Saint John’s University. The UMAC season begins a week later on Sept. 10 with the league’s most intriguing game between the Saints and 2015 most-improved MacMurray in Jacksonville, Illinois.
Week three (Sept. 24) sees poll No. 4 Westminster hosting No. 3 Greenville in what should be one of the top games of the season. Two weeks later (Oct. 5) Northwestern will see a tough test wlcoming MacMurray to St. Paul before the Eagles hit the road Oct. 11 to face St. Scholastica in a game that will surely have title implications.
Oct. 22 will see Northwestern head south to face Westminster in another game that could impact the top spots in the final standings. With Greenville selected to make a big jump in 2016, the final week of the season holds plenty of intrigue as St. Scholastica will look to lock up the title on the road against the Panthers.

Need to Know
- If 2014 was about advancing the program, 2015 was getting over the hump for MacMurray. The 6-4 2015 season was the first winning season since 2004 finishing 4th in the UMAC and best record since '04 as well.
- MacMurray also saw higher statistical rankings in the UMAC in several years. The Mac Defense finished 4th in UMAC scoring defense giving only 20.2 points/game - least since 2003. The Mac D also gave the Offense more opportunities than in years past taking away the ball 24 times also ranking fourth in the UMAC.
-The MacMurray Offense also had a banner year finishing first in UMAC scoring offense and well as 2nd in total yardage as well as passing yardage.
- Although the offense and defense made huge strides, the special teams units will need to step-up. Last season's difference between 6-4 and 8-2 was a missed extra point against Westminster and a several key let downs versus Minnesota Morris. Fortunately junior Grant Cooper, who is now historically ranked fourth in team all-time PATs scored and second in FGs scored in a season and third in all-time kick scoring. Grant's leadership will be vital for connecting the offense and defense for team success.
