Wisconsin-Superior men lead UMAC men's championship after day one

MORRIS, Minn.---After a spring with mostly cool temperatures and rainy weather, the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships saw warm temperatures that also brought impressive performances on the opening day of action Friday. 

The University of Wisconsin-Superior used several impressive performances and event wins to take the lead in the team standings with 123 points over the College of St. Scholastica with 93.50 points and the University of Minnesota Morris with 56.50 points.

The top individual highlight of the day came from the Saints' Jeremy Peterson who broke his own meet record in the hammer throw with a mark of 59.28 meters (194-6). His throw was over 12 meters further than the next competitor and currently ranks third in Division III. 

Minnesota Morris senior Justin Terry had an impressive first day winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.70 – a time that is faster than his previous meet record but does not count due to wind. Terry also ran the fastest time in the 100-meter prelims clocking a time of 10.70. 

The meet-leading Yellowjackets got an expected win from senior Jackson Lindquist in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with an solid time of 10:03.55. However, there were several surprise winners that included Caleb Hohensee in the pole vault and Gabe Zielke in the javelin throw. 

Hoehnsee – who was seeded third behind St. Scholastica standout Kevin Wagner and indoor champion Josiah Forker of the University of Northwestern-St. Paul – used a mark of 4.01 meters (13-1.75) to capture the individual title in the vault. Zielke had only the fourth-best mark in the javelin heading into the meet, but he edged out teammate Noah Potratz by four inches to capture the win with a throw of 52.57 (172-6). 

Minnesota Morris distance star Chalmer Combellick made his mark on the meet winning the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.31. Kyle Anenson earned a win for Northwestern taking the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.17 to round out the running events. 

St. Scholastica first-year Kenneth Jinkins outjumped teammate Wagner and the field in the long jump with a mark of 6.47 meters (21-2.75) to capture his first conference crown. Wagner ran the fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles prelims crossing the line in 15 seconds flat. 

Wisconsin-Superior won the lone relay of the night taking the 4 x 800-meter relay with an impressive time of 8:27.16. 

The remainder of the UMAC Championships meet is slated ot conclude Saturday at Minnesota Morris. Events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Live results are being provided by Hero's Timing.
