ST. PAUL, Minn.---After a competitive season of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) women’s tennis, the College of St. Scholastica used a critical victory over the University of Northwestern-St. Paul to clinch its 19th Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in the postseason tournament set to begin Friday.

With a share of the title on the line for Northwestern, the Saints used a 6-3 decision over the Eagles to win the title outright with a perfect 10-0 conference record. The Saints defeated the Eagles 7-2 earlier in the season to set the stage for a showdown Saturday. After finishing the season 8-2 overall, the Eagles locked the No. 2 spot and both will hope to meet again in the tournament title match Saturday.

First, the Eagles will need to hold off Martin Luther College – a team that locked up the No. 3 seed with a 7-2 win over Bethany Lutheran College Monday. The Knights swept North Central University and the University of Minnesota Morris to earn a spot in the tournament and will close out the regular season Tuesday versus Bethany Lutheran.

Bethany Lutheran College will look to upset the champion Saints after securing the No. 4 seed Monday. The Vikings earned a place in the tournament despite a regular-season split with Minnesota Morris due to tie-breaking procedures. They will look to upset the UMAC champs for a chance at the postseason title.

Both semifinal matches are slated to begin simultaneously at 6 p.m. Friday at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center. No. 1 St. Scholastica and No. 4 Bethany Lutheran will face off in semifinal one, while No. 2 Northwestern and No. 3 Martin Luther will compete in semifinal two.

The winners of Friday’s semifinals will compete for the postseason title in the UMAC championship Saturday at Baseline beginning at 1:30 p.m.

For both semifinal and championship matches, doubles will be played first. Singles matches cannot begin until all doubles matches have been completed.
