Men's Tennis Coaches Pick UNW as 2016 Favorite

The University of Northwestern is predicted to claim the 2016 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) men's tennis regular season title according to the annual poll of the league's coaches.

The College of St. Scholastica and the University of Northwestern women's tennis teams are predicted to share the 2016 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) women's tennis regular season title according to the league's coaches.

Game of the Week: Minnesota Morris at St. Scholastica - Women's Basketball

This week's Game of the Week will take place on Friday, February 5th at 7:30 p.m. as the University of Minnesota travels to the College of St. Scholastica in women's basketball action.

NEWS AND NOTES
Bethany Lutheran College 
The women’s basketball team continued their winning ways by defeating Northland and Finlandia over the weekend. Senior Briana Brandts recorded two double-doubles for the Vikings by averaging 16 points and 13.5 rebounds. In the victory over Finlandia, Haley Sandin scored 17 second half points, 29 total to pull away from the Lions late in the contest.
 
For the men’s basketball team, Brandyn Frelix scored 25 points on Friday night in the victory over Northland. On Saturday, he had another solid performance on the offensive end, finishing with 15 points. The Vikings went 1-1 over the weekend.
 
Sabrina Batalden earned her first career win as a women's tennis player at Bethany during the match against Northwestern (IA). The Vikings are currently 0-4 on the season.
 
Jacob Kubler earned a win during his singles match on Saturday for the men’s tennis team. Also, in doubles, Jason Buechler and Jacob Kubler defeated Bethel in their match. The Vikings are currently 0-4 on the young season.
 
With personal bests and marks in the top ten in school history, within their respective events, multiple athletes had a phenomenal weekend for the men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams. Visit blcvikings.com to see the weekend results.

College of St. Scholastica
The Men's Basketball team tied a program record by extending its home winning streak to 11 games with a pair of victories over the weekend. It is the longest home winning streak since the 2008-09 season when the Saints won their 11th consecutive game at the Reif and clinched the UMAC Tournament Championship. 
 
The St. Scholastica men's and women's track & field teams hosted the ninth annual Lake Superior Challenge on Saturday. The men set one program record in the 500m dash and had 11 top five finishes. The women won five events with Casey Hovland running the 11th fastest time in the nation in the 5k.
 
The men's and women's tennis teams opened their seasons over the weekend. The women defeated intracity rival Minnesota-Duluth for the eighth consecutive time on Friday, while the men extended its UMAC regular season unbeaten streak to 135 matches in a victory over North Central on Saturday.

Crown College
Men’s basketball player James Brown reached the 1,000 point mark on Saturday against St. Scholastica.  The junior reached 1,000 points in just 70 career games.  In three seasons, Brown has not missed a single start, averaging 28.3 minutes per game.

Brown has been a balanced scorer, netting 348 points from behind the three point line, 131 at the free throw line, and 522 in a variety of fashions inside the arc.  For his career, Brown has averaged 14.3 points per game and is now just 134 points shy of breaking Truman Shetlers NCAA era record for career points (1,135).

Martin Luther College
Martin Luther College sophomore Grace Schultz set a new career high with 26 points to lead MLC to a 74-54 win over Northland on Saturday. She finished the game 9-18 from the field, including 2-4 from beyond the three-point arc, and also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Schultz's previous career high was 23 points, set as a freshman last season.
 
Sophomore Mariah Schoof made three three-pointers in Friday's women's basketball win over Northland. She now has 101 three-point field goals for her career, making her the fourth player in program history to reach the 100 milestone.

North Central University 
Senior Josh High became the Rams career leader in made three point field goals in Saturday’s game versus Northwestern. With 239 made three pointers, he has averaged over 2.9 made shots from beyond the arch in his 81-game career.

University of Minnesota Morris 
In Men's Indoor Track & Field, Justin Terry ranks just outside the top 100 in the 60m after winning the race at the Gene Glader Invite.
 
Minnesota Morris men's basketball held St. Scholastica to just 16.4% shooting on Saturday, the lowest for an opponent since Trinity Bible shot just 13.8% on Nov. 19, 2013. Offensively the Cougars scored 47 points the fewest in a win based on results dating back to 1998.  The only known win with a similar offensive score was a 48-46 win over Northwestern on January 14, 2006. CD Douglas averaged 29 points this weekend, he now has 13 games with at least 20 points. 

University of Northwestern 
The men’s basketball remained in first in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference standings with a 93-79 win at NCU Saturday afternoon. Michael Carney scored a team-high 15 points, finishing with five 3-pointers to lead the Eagles.

The women’s basketball team won its fifth-straight game Saturday, as the Eagles downed NCU 74-59 to move their conference mark to 11-1. Kim Campbell and Jessica Cole scored 14 points apiece to lead UNW.

The women’s tennis team defeated the College of Saint Benedict 6-3 Saturday night to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Eagles will take on North Central and St. Catherine Saturday.

The men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams had a strong showing at the Gene Glader Classic Saturday, turning in a pair of first-place finishes and a school record. Alyssa Arends (3,000-meter run) and Wil Maki (800-meter run) both posted top finishes in their respective events and Brent Wipf (1,000-meter run) set a new school record to lead the Eagles.

The women’s lacrosse team completed its first official week of practice last week, as head coach Taylor Deetjen has filled her roster with 17 players for the Eagles’ inaugural lacrosse run this spring.
