ST. PAUL, Minn.---The  College of St. Scholastica claimed the 2016 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship title for the seventh time in program history this past weekend at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

With that team success came additional individual honors as the Saints’ earned the Coach of the Year and Field Athlete of the Meet Awards, while Wisconsin-Superior claimed the Track Athlete of the Meet Award announced Tuesday.

After leading the Saints’ to a 30-point victory over the Yellowjackets, Kirk Nauman was selected by his peers as UMAC Men’s Indoor Coach of the Year for the third time, while senior Corey Anderson collected the top field athlete honor for the third-consecutive year. Charles Corbett of Wisconsin-Superior garnered the top track award following his record-setting weekend on his home track.

Heading into the final day of competition Saturday, the Saints were behind Wisconsin-Superior by 10 points. Under Nauman’s direction, the Saints pulled ahead in the final events of the day to hold off the Yellowjackets for first place with a score of 235.50.

The Saints turned in a remarkable five individual event victories and one relay victory in the 4 x 400-meter event. Nauman’s squad also turned in 23 top-three event finishes over the two-day stretch. He also led Anderson and fellow senior Kevin Wagner to record-setting performances Friday.

Anderson wrapped up his UMAC indoor track and field career in impressive style with three top-three finishes in Superior, Wisconsin. On the opening day of competition, Anderson took home his second-consecutive title in the high jump breaking his own record set a year ago. The senior’s mark of 2.01 meters (6-7) now ranks 25th in Division III which could put Anderson in the conversation for a bid to the NCAA meet.

In addition to his high jump performance, Anderson recorded a second-place mark of 12.70 meters (41-10) in the triple jump and a third-place mark of 6.43 meters (21-1.25) in the long jump. He finished the meet with 24 points individually toward the Saints’ team score.

Anderson wasn’t the only athlete leaving his mark on the UMAC Championships – 2015 UMAC Cross Country champion Corbett set three individual meet records and helped the Yellowjackets break the distance medley relay record as well to highlight a spectacular first UMAC meet for the squad.

In Friday’s evening session, Corbett ran to a title-winning time of 15:16.33 in the 5,000-meter to better the previous record by 24 seconds. He then anchored the Yellowjackets’ DMR squad that recorded a new meet record time of 10:41.20.

On Saturday, Corbett kicked off the meet in exciting fashion when he took the mile crown on the final two turns to set a new record of 4:21.10. Later, he raced to another record-setting win in the 3,000-meter run clocking a time of 8:50.04. He finished the meet scoring 30 points individually and 10 as a relay member to help the Yellowjackets take second with 205.50 points.

Not only did Corbett make his mark at the championships, but he did in the regular season as well. He earned UMAC Player of the Week on Feb. 16. Corbett also ran a time of 14:40.41 in the 5,000-meter event that currently ranks 16th in contention for a bid to the national meet. The senior also has a time that ranks 32nd in the nation in the 3,000-meter run.

All-conference honors were also awarded Tuesday to athletes who collected a first- or second-place finish in any individual event and to individual members of a first-place relay team. In addition to Anderson and Corbett, 22 others earned the accolade including 10 from runner-up Wisconsin-Superior, seven from St. Scholastica, two athletes each from the University of Minnesota Morris and the University of Northwestern-St. Paul, as well as one from Bethany Lutheran College.

The Saints’ Kevin Wagner and the Cougars’ Justin Terry were the only other athletes to post multiple event wins. Wagner captured victories in the 400-meter dash and long jump and set a new meet record in the 60-meter hurdles. Terry repeated as 60-meter dash champion and outraced Wagner for a title in the 200-meter dash.

Each year the UMAC recognizes the team sportsmanship award, an accolade that is selected by the UMAC coaches and awarded to the team that best represented sportsmanship throughout the entire season. Bethany Lutheran earned the honor for the fourth time. Each team also had one representative on the individual sportsmanship award list.
