St. Scholastica captures UMAC women's indoor title for seventh-straight year

SUPERIOR, Wis.---Heading into the final day of the 2016 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships, six-time defending champion College of St. Scholastica had a commanding  lead over runner-up University of Minnesota Morris. With a handful of exciting finishes, the Saints held on for an impressive seventh-consecutive team title Saturday in Superior.

The Saints won with a score of 246, while Minnesota Morris captured second place with 173 points. Meet host University of Wisconsin-Superior took third in its first UMAC appearance with 126.50 points. Bethany Lutheran College was fourth with a score of 83.50 and University of Northwestern-St. Paul finished fifth with three points. 

The first meet record of the day fell in the sprints as Minnesota Morris senior Teja Foy battled teammate Alicia Doerr in the 60-meter dash. After Doerr ran the fastest time in Friday's prelims, Foy hit her stride to break the previous record set in 2012 with a time of 8.08.

After winning the 5,000-meter run in record fashion Friday, St. Scholastica's Casey Hovland showed no signs of slowing down as she raced to another record Saturday. This time, she shattered the 3,000-meter record previously set a year ago with a time of 10:28.22 to win her second title of the meet. 

Wisconsin-Superior first-year standout Kelli Praska continued to shine winning two events Saturday for a meet total of three individual event titles. In the opening event of the day, Praska clocked a 5:25.45 in the mile to capture a win before racing to a time of 2:19.53 for victory in the 800-meter run.  

St. Scholastica's Hannah Russert repeated as UMAC champion in the 60-meter hurdles after tying Wisconsin-Superior's Svenja Ruehl in the prelims Friday. Russert edged out Ruehl in the finals with a time of 9.49 to seal the win. Reuhl did manage to win her second title of the meet in the triple jump with a mark of 11.25 meters (36-11).

The Saints' also had a repeat champion in the 200-meter dash as sophmore Sammi Agrir clocked a time of 25.42 for the victory. 

The pole vault came down to a tiebreaker as Saints' junior Katharine Roetering and Minnesota Morris junior Carley Denler both cleared a height of 3.16 meters (10-4.25). Roetering took just one attempt to clear, while Denler needed three attempts. Therefore, Roetering captured the conference crown. 

The Saints' first-year Emily Conley added another victory for the Saints in the shot put. Her winning throw measured at 12.33 meters (40-5.5). The final event of the meet and event win for the Saints came in the 4 x 400-meter relay as the team of Agrir, Taylor Gibson, Breana Scchofner and Emily Lundgren clocked a time of 4:05.56. 

The UMAC all-conference, Athletes of the Meet and Coach of the Year awards will be annouced early next week.
