The Saints locked up the No. 1 seed with a victory over the University of Northwestern-St. Paul in a decisive winner-take-all game Saturday in Duluth, Minnesota. The Saints finished the season with a 13-3 UMAC record and 18-7 overall. As the top seed, the Saints will host a semifinal game Wednesday evening against the winner of Monday’s quarterfinal game between No. 4 University of Minnesota Morris and No. 5 University of Wisconsin-Superior.
The No. 4-seed Cougars locked up a right to host Monday’s matchup with a win over Martin Luther College Friday and a series of tie-breaker scenarios cleared up Saturday. The Cougars – who finished the season 9-7 in the UMAC and 12-13 overall – will make their ninth-straight UMAC postseason appearance.
The No. 5-seed Yellowjackets clinched the final spot in the playoffs with a dramatic upset of Northwestern on their home court Friday evening. In their first season as a UMAC competitor, the Yellowjackets finished with a 8-8 conference record and 12-13 overall to earn a chance to face the Cougars Monday at 5:30 p.m. in Morris, Minnesota.
The other two post season spots include No. 2 Northwestern and No. 3 North Central University. The Eagles entered the final weekend of the regular season with a league-best 12-2 record and eight-game winning streak. That came to a halt, though, with two losses which forced the Eagles to settle for the No. 2 seed with a record of 12-4 in the UMAC and 20-5 overall.
North Central will face the Eagles in a semifinal Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. in St. Paul. The Rams claimed the third spot in the postseason field with a clutch 77-74 win over the Yellowjackets and the Cougars loss Saturday. This will be the Rams’ second-straight UMAC postseason appearance after finishing 10-6 in the UMAC and 13-12 overall.
The winners of Wednesday’s semifinals will face off in the UMAC championship game – with a bid to the NCAA tournament on the line – Saturday at the site of the highest remaining seed. Game time is dependent on competing teams and the women’s basketball title game location.
