"This Week in the UMAC" is a weekly publication of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference that is normally distributed on Mondays throughout the academic year. It features standings, schedules, news and notes, as well as upcoming events from around the conference.

HEADLINES
Game of the Week: Bethany Lutheran at North Central - Men's Basketball
February 11th, 2016
This week's Game of the Week will take place on Friday, February 12th at 5:30 p.m. as Bethany Lutheran College travels to North Central University in men's basketball action. 

NEWS AND NOTES
Bethany Lutheran College 
The women’s basketball team split a pair of UMAC contest over the weekend. The Vikings defeated North Central before losing to Northwestern in the final minutes of the game. Haley Sandin averaged 22.5 points in 37.5 minutes for Bethany in two games. Minnie Frederick-Childress recorded 13 steals in two games, to stay atop the nation in steals (4.9 per game) this season.
 
Brandyn Frelix scored 22 points in the loss to North Central while adding seven rebounds for the Vikings. He responded with 17 points and eight rebounds on Saturday against Northwestern.  The Vikings need two victories in the final weekend of conference play to make the postseason tournament.
 
The women’s tennis team earned their first victory of the season, defeating Mount Marty 5-4 at the Owatonna Tennis Club. Justine Bennett won her first match of the season at the number three singles spot for Bethany. In doubles, Justine Bennett and Ryana Sadaka earned a defeat at the second doubles spot. In the third doubles match, Madalyn Elmquist and Kaitlyn Bolte earned a match win for the Vikings.
 
The men’s tennis team dropped a pair of matches against UW-Eau Claire and Hamline over the weekend.
 
The Bethany men’s and women’s Track and Field team competed at Carleton College’s Meet of Hearts. With peak training in play and a lot of tired bodies, the Vikings showed that they can still have a great weekend on both the track and field, while training in bulk. 

College of St. Scholastica
In Men's Basketball's overtime victory over UW-Superior on Saturday, the Saints set a program record for most combined points and was also the first time both teams recorded over 100 points in a game. CSS also set a program record for most made free throws in a game (38) and most points scored in a single overtime period (21). Joe Stark tied a program record with 14 made free throws. Both teams combined to attempt 91 free throws. The win set a program record for consecutive home wins (12).
 
Women's Track & Field's Nicole Christianson broke her own program record in the high jump, clearing 1.70m at Saturday's Yellowjacket Open. That mark currently ranks fifth in NCAA Division III. The Men's Track & Field team set three program record in the 60m hurdles, 200m hurdles and 5,000m run.

Martin Luther College
Men's basketball player Todd Brassow has scored 520 points this season, just six away from the MLC men's basketball single-season record. That record of 526 points was set by Tom Engelbrecht during the 2002-03 season. 
 
Women's basketball senior point guard Erin Schmeling moved into third place in program history with 223 career made free throws. She passed Brittney Gossen (221) and Emma Babinec (220) over the weekend. She also is just three assists shy of 200 for her career at MLC.

North Central University 
Senior Cody Martin became the fourth player in NCU men’s hoops history to reach 300 career assists after recording five helpers in Saturday’s win over Martin Luther College. He currently leads the UMAC with 5.7 APG in overall play.
 
Sophomore Lizzy Swanson continues to lead the UMAC in scoring this season. She is first in both overall action and in conference play, averaging 19.7 and 19.1 points per contest respectively.

University of Minnesota Morris 
Tori Holt had a career high 27 points on Saturday. She also scored 20 points in back-to-back games for the first time in her career. As a team Morris shot 52.6% from the field in both games this weekend, setting a new season high.

The Cougars had 11 top-ten finishes at the UST Showcase on Friday night for Indoor Track & Field. 
 
John Haseman had a career high 22 points vs Northland.

University of Northwestern 
The women’s basketball team picked up a pair of wins over the weekend, including a thrilling 68-65 win over Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday evening. The Eagles improve to 19-4 overall and 13-7 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play. Kim Campbell averaged 17.5 points in the two victories to lead the Eagles.

The men’s basketball team reached the 20-win plateau after picking up two wins over the weekend. The Eagles topped Martin Luther College, 82-42, Friday before defeating Bethany Lutheran on Saturday, 74-63. Porter Morrell averaged 17.5 points in the two victories, including a 28-point effort against BLC.

The men’s tennis team fell to Hamline University Friday night, 8-1. CJ Lloyd picked up the lone win for the Eagles at No. 1 singles to remain unbeaten in singles play on the season.

The women’s tennis team split on Saturday, sweeping North Central University before falling to St. Catherine University, 5-4, in the nightcap. Rachel Bostrom went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles play to lead the Eagles.

The men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams turned in their best showing of the year, posting 21 personal-best performances at the UW-Superior Yellowjacket Open Saturday. Alyssa Arends set a new school record in the 5,000-meter run (19:18.63) in addition to taking sixth in the 3,000-meter run (11:33.38). Dominique Ward recorded two new personal bests in the mile run and the 800-meter run. On the men’s side, Jordan Spahr had season-best performances in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash, along with being a member of the 4x200-meter relay team that clocked their fastest time of the year.

The women’s lacrosse team opens its inaugural season with a 9:30 p.m. contest against the University of Dubuque on Saturday inside the Augsburg dome.
